Proficiency Exams

We offer 4 pathways for students to Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) -- the process DCC uses to evaluate learning that happens outside the college classroom. Proficiency Examinations are one of those pathways. As a matriculated (degree- or certificate-seeking) student, you may earn credits for courses that are specifically required in their curricula by achieving acceptable scores on departmental proficiency examinations. Make sure to plan ahead as the process can take at least 30 days.

Steps to Schedule a Proficiency Exam:

  1. You can download a copy of the Proficiency Credit Payment form here. Or you can pick up the form from the Student Financial Services Office in the Student Services Center, room 202.
  2. Take the form to your program or department chair to get approval. Students must meet with the appropriate department head to gain approval to take a proficiency exam and to discuss the content and format of the exam.
  3. After you receive approval to take the exam, you'll make your payment at Student Financial Services in Student Services Center, room 202. You can also pay online. A non-refundable fee of $69/credit, payable before registering for the examination, is charged for each proficiency exam attempted.
  4. Submit your completed form and schedule the exam with a Testing Center proctor.
