The Office of Accommodative Services (OAS) is committed to providing equal access and an inclusive campus community by providing accessibility services and advocacy for individuals with disabilities.We are also committed to eliminating competitive disadvantages and remove environmental barriers that impact learning while fostering independent, self-determined learners.
Student Learning Outcomes
As a result of our orientation, initial intake process, the development of a comprehensive accommodation plan and our formal outreach efforts, students who engage with the Office of Accommodative Services will be able to:
- Communicate the point of environmental impact of their disability and its implication in the educational setting.
- Demonstrate continued self-advocacy and the ability to communicate his/her needs by utilizing accommodations that are necessary to minimize environmental barriers present in the various elements of campus life.
- Acquire knowledge pertaining to the full spectrum of supportservices available to all students on campus.
Students who believe they have a current and essential need for accommodative services are encouraged to self-identify, provide documentation (prepared by a qualified professional), complete the student ‘Self-Assessment Survey’ and meet with our professional staff. Together a comprehensive accommodation plan is developed and their initial ‘letter of accommodation’ for faculty is generated. Accommodation plans are developed on a case by case basis through the interactive process with the student, and consultation with faculty. Students are advised to share this letter with faculty as soon as possible if they wish to access testing and classroom accommodations. Accommodations are fluid and students can meet with our staff at any point to reevaluate needs.
Students who believe they are experiencing discrimination on campus may contact the ADA/Section 504 Coordinator in the Office of Human Resources.
If you are dissatisfied with the outcome of the grievance procedures, or wish to pursue an alternative to using these procedures, you may file a complaint against the school with the Office of Civil Rights: (http://www.ed.gov/ocr/docs/howto.html)
Prospective students can email (OASdocumentation@sunydutchess.edu) or fax (888-965-6996) documentation to OAS directly, documentation is kept confidential and if a student decides not to enroll at DCC, documentation will be purged from our records. Records will be purged following 7 years of inactivity. It is highly recommended that students maintain a copy of their documentation for future use.
After the initial intake, students request accommodation letters each subsequent semester, barring no changes, no appointment is necessary.
- Submit a DCC admission application.
- Provide documentation of your disability 3-5 weeks in advance of need:
- Have your medical provider fill out our Disability Verification Form or
- Submit a copy of your most recent Psychoeducational evaluation plan and/or Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 plan.
- OAS will review documentation and authorize placement test accommodations if needed.'
- After taking placement test, follow instructions from the College regarding registration for classes.
- OAS staff will contact registered students to schedule an intake meeting to develop an accommodation plan.
Services for Students Include:
- Transition to college supports and programs.
- Classroom and testing accommodations/academic adjustments such as enlarged print, assistance with lecture capture strategies, interpreter services, assisted listening devices, and assistance with arrangements to make audio recordings of classes, extended test time.
- Alternate format of textbooks and class material.
- Sign language interpreters and remote captions services.
- Individualized academic support such as time management and organization, study skills, test and notetaking skills, adaptive tech training, and professional tutoring in a wide range of subjects and study strategies.
- Workshops/Group Work based on student need: study groups can be customized for a particular subject or desired training.
- Assistive Technology and training: screen readers and magnification, voice to text programs, amplification systems, CCTV, alternate text format.
- Advocacy and referrals.
- Campus accessibility.
- OAS is a National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) site.
OAS works collaboratively with faculty/staff, ACCES-VR (Adult Career Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation), NYS Commission for the Blind, Taconic Resources for Independence and the Dutchess County Transition Council.
