Kids and Teens

These classes are designed for students of elementary and middle school. We have a diverse range of options: instrumental/vocal classes, academic classes, and ensembles. The aim of these programs are to help young students establish a well-rounded foundation of musicianship.

Instrumental & Voice

Kids Sing

Students will experience the joy of singing in a group setting. Using creative play and engaging songs, they will learn basic singing techniques including pitch matching, breath support, and body awareness. They will also develop acting and stage presence while learning exciting Broadway songs.

Group Piano for Beginners

In this introductory group class, students will learn basic piano skills through collaboration, one-on-one instruction and independent practice. Each student will have access to their own keyboard and a combination of music reading music performance skills will be emphasized. Topics include: correct posture and hand position; using dynamics to play expressively; introduction to the five finger pattern, major scales, and common chords; using the pedals and reading standard piano notation.

Violin for Beginners

Drawing a sound from a stringed instrument is a uniquely satisfying experience. Anyone curious about the violin - whether you studied as a child or are a complete beginner - is welcome to join. Learn the natural motions that let you produce a beautiful sound with ease. By the end of the class, you'll be playing some of your favorite songs!

Guitar for Beginners

Learn the basics of playing guitar: chords, strumming, finger-picking, how to play solos, fundamentals of music and technique. Lots of "hands-on" experience in a variety of styles, including alternative, folk, blues, pop, classical and flamenco. You'll finish this course able to play simple tunes and chords. Students must bring their own guitar or contact the office for rental information.

Ensemble

Rock Band

Rock Band is available to young students interested in an opportunity to sing or play guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drums with a complete band. This course focuses on learning and performing classic and contemporary pop/rock repertoire. Through regular practice and collaboration, students will develop teamwork and performance skills, providing a solid foundation for aspiring young musicians.

Youth Chamber Music

Youth Chamber Music is intended for a small group of instruments, such as trios and quartets, usually with one performer to a part. This class offers a unique opportunity for young musicians to experience the fun and interactive world of chamber music. You can bring a pre-formed group with a minimum of two people, and set your own schedule with one of our professional coaches. If you don't have a group, you will form one with other students in the class.

Core Music

Music Theory For Beginners

This course is designed for both musicians and non-musicians. It is a preparatory course for students with little or no prior training in music theory or music literacy. The class provides students with a solid foundation in the rudiments of music notation and aural awareness including pitch, accidentals, rhythm, clefs, major and minor scales, and key signatures. The circle of fifths, triad types, simple and compound meters and elementary ear training exercises are incorporated.

Music History for Beginners

This course is a historical overview of musical styles through representative works of each period. It entails a comprehensive, chronological study of the developments, trends, and styles in instrumental and vocal genres of representative composers of the Classic, Romantic, Impressionist, and Modern periods. The aim is to stimulate an understanding and enjoyment of music through the development of an understanding of the styles and genre.

Composition for Beginners

In this course, students will learn the fundamental aspects of music composition and songwriting. In addition to short composition exercises, they will be required to complete one long-term project resulting in their own original piece of music. Students will learn about the basics of notation, music theory, instrument design, and text setting. To fully understand these concepts, we will spend the first half of the course listening to and analyzing music from popular and classical genres from around the world. The second half of the course will focus entirely on music composed by the students, including practical workshops and group discussions about their classmates’ work.
