Academic Coaching Syllabus

How much time should you make for studying? A good rule of thumb is two hours a week for every credit hour you're taking.

The ACT Center gives you support for success, including advisement and transfer planning. Academic coaches teach you the skills necessary to choose a major and design an achievable degree plan.

How It All Works and What You Need to Know

Your responsibilities as a student:

  • Check myDCC email regularly.
  • Schedule appointments with an academic coach when needed to stay on track.
  • Arrive for appointments on time and prepared.
  • Monitor your academic plan on Degree Works.
  • Learn to independently create and manage your own class schedule.
  • Be proactive in communicating your transfer and career goals.
  • Communicate honestly about issues affecting your goals and performance.
  • Be responsible for your own success!
  • Read the syllabus for each of your courses. 

Your academic coach's responsibilities:

  • Teach you how to use support tools like Degree Works and Starfish.
  • Foster two-way communication with you.
  • Partner with you to develop, and maintain your educational plans.
  • Explain your degree/graduation requirements.
  • Collaborate with instructors regarding your progress.
  • Emphasize college policies and deadlines.
  • Assist you with transitioning to college expectations and emphasize available resources.
  • Assist you in identifying personal, academic, and professional goals!

What does that mean? Important college terminology:

Outline of an entire college course.

Courses needed to complete a degree program.

To be enrolled in a specific program of study.

Completion of a course of study.

Completion of an abridged course of study.

School publication describing academic programs, services, and policies.

DCC CATALOG

Completion of an abridged course of study.

Form needed to confirm graduation.

GRADUATION APPLICATION

Get this from your coach; you need it to register!

A specific course that is required to complete before taking another course at the next level.

A specific course that is required to complete before or along with another course at the next level.

To be enrolled in one or more classes.

Removing a class during a partial refund period.

Removing a class after the drop period, resulting in a “W” on the transcript and has no effect on grade point average, but could affect your financial aid.
