Artwork by Dean Goldberg to commemorate 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht: Exhibit Opens November 8

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — NOV. 2, 2023 — The exhibit, which includes photography, video, sound and sculpture, will be on display in Dutchess Community College’s Mildred I. Washington Gallery from November 8 to December 8.

A series of photographs by artist Dean Goldberg tell a fictional story of a Jewish woman and a Nazi soldier who meet on The Night of Broken Glass, when Nazis broke store windows and vandalized Jewish businesses all over Germany. The exhibit contextualizes the narrative and raises questions about contemporary political unrest.

The show, curated by Gallery Director and DCC Professor of Communications Dana Weidman, will open November 8 and run through December 8. All KRISTALLNACHT events are free and open to the public.

An opening reception will be held in the gallery from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on November 8. Following the reception, guests are invited to the Louis Greenspan cafeteria for a keynote address and panel discussion beginning at 7 p.m.

Professor of History and Honors Program Coordinator Dr. Werner Steger, recipient of the Greenspan Trust-Handel Foundation Endowed Chair in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will give the keynote address. The panel will feature Mr. Goldberg, Dr. Steger and journalist Rosemary Armao.

The Washington Art Gallery is open to the public Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Docent tours may be scheduled by appointment.
