February 24, 2020 – Joseph Schneider of Poughkeepsie, a second-year student in Dutchess Community College’s
Clinical Laboratory Technology associate degree program and Phlebotomy certificate
program, has earned a 2019-2020 Vanguard Award. He is one of seven students from across
the state to earn the honor, which recognizes outstanding post-secondary level students
who are enrolled in career or technical education programs that prepare them for professions
not traditional for their gender.
Schneider was nominated for the award by Karen Ingham, assistant professor and chair
of DCC’s Allied Health and Biological Sciences department. She described Schneider
as “a responsible, conscientious and academically driven individual” who is “consistently
prepared to participate in both classroom discussions and laboratory activities and
who contributes greatly to the academic atmosphere of the course.”
The Vanguard Award is administered by the New York State Nontraditional Employment
& Training Program, Center for Women in Government & Civil Society, and is sponsored
by the New York State Education Department through a Carl D. Perkins grant.
