Hispanic Heritage Month: Photographing Community at US-Mexico Border
José Luis Cano Jr. is a PhD candidate in rhetoric and composition at Texas Christian University. His work centers on migration--the movement of people, languages, and stories across borders--and photography provides a writing technology to illustrate these movements.
Photographing communities presents possibilities to frame visual moments in proximity to the individual and convey messages across linguistic differences. Incorporating personal narrative, scholarship, and photos from the US-Mexico border, this lecture elaborates on the use of photography to visualize the nuances, contradictions, and intimacies of composing community. In so doing, the speaker aims to motivate individuals to consider their own communities and the composing possibilities through photography.
