A Hot Start to a Cool Career: Fall 2025
This fall, DCC is launching the first cohort of HVAC students. If you’re ready to get started or take the next step in your career, now’s the perfect time. Students in this first group will receive a $2,100 scholarship toward tuition and fees! You'll also get a $500 book voucher and a $300 stipend to help you with some of the costs of transportation and attendance.
To be eligible, you must enroll full-time in the Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Certificate and register for HVAC Technician Foundational Skills I. Space is limited, and both day and evening cohorts are available. Learn more below.

Each microcredential is designed to build toward something bigger. The courses you complete will apply to DCC’s Air Conditioning & Refrigeration Certificate. You’ll also earn digital badges along the way to demonstrate your skills to employers.
This program is suited for those looking to begin a career in HVAC, as well as professionals seeking to expand their skills. Whether you’re just entering the trades or adding new certifications to your resume, these microcredentials offer a flexible, focused path to industry-relevant experience.
Courses are offered in both day and evening cohorts at the Mechatronics Lab in DCC’s Center of Excellence for Industry & Innovation in Fishkill.
What You Study in Our HVAC Technician Microcredentials
DCC’s HVAC technician microcredentials are designed to help you build practical, job-ready skills in heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Each takes just 15 weeks to complete and builds on the one before—starting with core system knowledge and progressing to more advanced concepts in air distribution, heating and control systems.
All courses are taught in person at the Mechatronics Lab at DCC’s Center of Excellence for Industry & Innovation in Fishkill, where you’ll work with the same tools used by HVAC professionals.
HVAC Technician Foundational Skills I: 12 credits
Get started with core knowledge in refrigeration systems, basic electricity and customer interaction. This first microcredential is designed for new students and professionals looking to strengthen foundational skills in HVAC service and support.
- ACR 101: Air Conditioning and Refrigeration I
An introduction to the theory of operation of simple refrigeration and air conditioning systems - PHS 115: Fundamentals of Electricity
Explore electricity’s fundamental principles, including voltage, current, resistance and power - BUS 113: Customer Service and Engagement
Develop communication and problem-solving skills for effective customer interactions in technical settings
HVAC Technician Foundational Skills II: 6 credits
Build on your foundation with more advanced system applications and technical drawing. This level is ideal for students who have completed HVAC I and want to expand their technical knowledge in system controls, diagnostics and design. To enroll in HVAC II, students must complete the HVAC I microcredential.

Explore more complex cooling and heat pump systems, with a focus on troubleshooting and sequential controls - ENT 131: Technical Drawing
Learn technical sketching and drawing techniques, including orthographic projection and isometric presentation
HVAC Technician Foundational Skills III: 12 credits

Focus on heating systems, duct design and automated controls—key components of HVAC installation and service. This level is designed for students preparing for advanced roles or seeking a deeper understanding of system design and integration. To enroll in HVAC III, students must complete the HVAC II microcredential.
- HVA 1XX: Ventilation and Air Distribution
Study air measurement devices, duct system design, layout and building codes related to air distribution systems. - HVA 1XX: Theory of Heating
Learn thermodynamic principles and combustion processes. Explore the operation of gas and oil burners. - HVA 2XX: HVAC Controls
Understand wiring controls, safety protocols and control automation used in modern HVAC systems.
