Laura Hammond Toonkel is a native of Dutchess County, New York. She graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA and later earned her MFA from Pennsylvania State University. She was also awarded a scholarship at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
Toonkel has an abiding interest in nature and ecology. Since returning to the Hudson Valley, the artist has through her art and curricula sought to raise the consciousness for the beauty and fragility of our region’s wetlands. She has also developed programs for public school children to promote awareness of our natural resources.
One person exhibits have been held at The Loft, Millbrook; Barrett House, Poughkeepsie; Tivoli Artist Co-op, Tivoli; and the Museum of Hudson Highlands, Cornwall-on-Hudson. She has also exhibited at Vassar College and Marist College in Poughkeepsie, and the Silvermine Guild Art Center, New Canaan, CT.
Part of her sixteen-piece series Hammond’s Pond is included in the collection of the Morgan Guaranty Trust Company, New York City.
