The Dutchess Community College Writing Center provides services from peer tutors trained in English 218, Advanced Composition/Peer Tutoring in Writing and from professional tutors. The Center offers a friendly, informal atmosphere where students may work with tutors on any writing assignment or task, primarily one-on-one but occasionally in groups. The Department of English and Humanities encourages composition students to use tutors to test ideas for their writing, to talk about strategies for organization and development, to weigh the effectiveness of their revisions, and to fine-tune their editing skills. Students may use the computers in the Center for word processing their papers, researching class assignments on the Internet, and using other course-related software. A teaching lab assistant and/or student aides will be available at all times to assist students. Students may use the free services of the Writing Center on a drop-in basis but are encouraged to make appointments to work with tutors.
The Center offers a library of books and some journals that might be useful to faculty, on topics such as journal writing, portfolios, theories of composition, computer-mediated classroom writing, and writing across the disciplines. Only faculty may check out these materials. Online tutoring is offered through the Writing Center’s website.
Students are encouraged to enter the Writing Center's annual writing contest with cash prizes.
