FOCUS is a learning community that brings students together to develop reading, writing and study skills during their first semester. Entering DCC freshmen are invited to participate if their placement test scores indicate they would benefit from the program.
The goal of FOCUS is to provide motivated students the tools necessary to meet their educational goals. Through taking an English course, Reading Course and College Study Skills Course with some of the 100 other students in the learning community, FOCUS students form relationships with faculty and advisors that increase their academic success. The students relationship with DCC is enhanced by peer mentoring, financial aid guidance, tutoring and academic advising.
The success of the program is seen in the number of students staying in college. Over 86 percent of FOCUS students from the Fall 2010 semester registered for the Spring 2011 semester at DCC – a rate that exceeds local and national averages for freshmen community college students.
