Student Government Association

The Student Activities Office serves as the nerve center for the Student Government Association (SGA). The Office provides, to the best of its ability, everything the SGA could ever need.
President Vice-President Student Trustee
Treasurer Senate Commissioners

The Student Government Association is comprised of all students, full and part-time. It is led by a President and Vice-President. The President Acts as the official student representative of DCC and the Vice-President presides over the Senate Meetings. Both President and Vice-President are elected by the student body and serve one year terms starting and ending at commencement. Each have powers outlined by the SGA Constitution and are subject to qualifications specified by the Constitution.

Senators and Club Representatives make up the Senate and control policy and legislation within the Student Government Association. They are also charged with administering the Student Activity Fees and appropriating funds to the various clubs and organizations on campus. The Senate charters all student organizations and undertakes any project or activity promoting the general interest of the college. All Senate Meetings are open to the campus and everyone is welcome to attend. Senate Meetings usually occur on Tuesdays at 12:30pm during the normal academic year. Meetings take place in the Dutchess East Lounge. The Senate is also comprised of several sub-committees that meet at various times throughout the semester, usually during activity periods, or when their members' schedules permit. Some of the sub-committees include: Charters and By-Laws, Community Service, Budget, and Public Relations.

Four Standing Commissioner Positions as well as an "as needed" fifth commissioner also help make up the SGA. The four standing positions are:

  • Commissioner of Part-Time Students
  • Commissioner of Law
  • Commissioner of Student Activities
  • Commissioner of Academics
  • The "as needed" position is the Commissioner of Finance, who is appointed in the absence of an elected Treasurer.

Each Commissioner acts as chairperson of a particular committee pertaining to his/her position. The Commissioner of Part-time Students heads a committee that deals with concerns of part-time students, and also those of DCC South and DCC's other extension sites. The Commissioner of Law heads the Law committee and acts as Chief Justice of The Student Court. The Law Committee rules on questions of procedure and settles disputes within the SGA. The Commissioner of Student Activities leads the Programming Board, the committee charged with planning most of the campus wide events at DCC. Finally, the Commissioner of Academics and his/her committee serve as a liaison between the students of DCC and the Office of Academic Affairs and the various academic departments.

The SGA Treasurer works with SGA Bookkeeper and the Assistant Director of Student Activities to oversee the SGA Budget. This involves hearing and ruling on requests for allocations and reallocations of student activity fees as well as maintaining written records of such requests. The treasurer is elected by the student body. In the event of vacancy in the Treasurer position the SGA President may appoint a Commissioner of Finance to assume the duties of Treasurer.

A Student Trustee, elected by the student body, rounds out the SGA. The Student Trustee is an actual voting member of the DCC Board of Trustees with all powers and privileges granted by that position. He/she is sworn in at a summer meeting of The Board and serves a one year term. The Student Trustee's main job is to act as a voice for all students to the Board of Trustees and to report back to the Senate on all actions taken by The Board.

Of course, this is only the tip of the iceberg. There are many aspects of the SGA, too many to cover here in fact. The best way to find answers to your questions is to visit the Student Activities Office in Dutchess Hall, Room 201. Or, you can call the Activities Office at (845) 431-8050. Or, email the Director of Student Activities, Mike Weida with any questions you have.
