Current DCC students who will have at least 24 credits by May 2012 may apply for Continuing Student scholarships in the Department-Specific or Special categories. Criteria for each scholarship follows.

DEPARTMENT-SPECIFIC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CONTINUING DCC STUDENTS

 

ALLIED HEALTH AND BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES
Including Fire Science, Paramedic, Phlebotomy and Medical Laboratory Technology

Dutchess County Home Bureau – Two awards of $500 each
The Dutchess County Home Bureau is an organization of women whose goals are community service, consumer education, health, and safety education. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is enrolled in the allied health program.

Eileen Firman Memorial Scholarship – $500
Eileen Firman, a dedicated nurse in the community for 38 years, showed concern for others that went far beyond her nursing career. Her compassion and putting others before self was evidence of the priority she placed on improving the quality of life for anyone in need. This award is for a student in allied health and biological sciences who is a full-time student with a GPA of 3.2 or higher. Priority will be given to a student planning to transfer to a four-year institution in a biological science field.

Dr. Alfredo Fonts Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Dr. Alfredo Fonts, a former faculty member and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs at DCC. Also included in this endowment are funds raised in memory of Claire Cataldo Cutbill, '72, a graduate of the dental assisting program. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who has achieved a GPA of 3.0 or higher and who has taken at least two courses pursuing a degree offered by the Allied Health and Biological Sciences Department.

Drs. Florence H. and Elvin E. Gottdiener Memorial Scholarship – $500
Elvin Gottdiener was a prominent Poughkeepsie physician. This memorial scholarship was established by his wife, Dr. Florence Gottdiener, and is continued by his family today. It is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in a medically related field.

Dr. Lloyd D. Harris Memorial Scholarship – $500
The family of Dr. Lloyd D. Harris, a prominent area psychiatrist, established this scholarship. It is awarded to a full-time student in DCC's allied health curriculum.

Dennis Kipp Memorial Scholarship – $500
Dennis Kipp was an environmental reporter for the Poughkeepsie Journal for many years until his death in the summer of 1998. Family and friends established this scholarship to assist a full-time student who demonstrates a keen interest in the environmental or human sciences programs.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident.

Millbrook Tribute Garden Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship was established by Millbrook Tribute Garden. This award is given to a full-time student in the allied health and biological science program who is a Dutchess County resident, with preference to a resident of the Town of Washington.

Bruce W. Pells Memorial Scholarship – $500
Bruce Pells was a councilman who served the Town of Poughkeepsie and was greatly respected by his community. Bruce and his family were very active in the Arlington Fire District. This memorial scholarship is awarded annually to a full-or part-time student who must have completed 24 credits by the upcoming fall and is majoring in the fire protection technology or fire and occupational safety programs. In addition, students must have achieved at least a 2.50 GPA

Elbert Stillwagon Memorial Scholarship – Two awards of $3,000 each
This scholarship is awarded to students studying in the fire science program. Recipients will be asked to assist in or help promote some LP gas training by the NY Propane Association. A student may only be awarded this scholarship one time.

 

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES
Including Criminal Justice, Early Childhood, Child Care and Human Services

Sheriff Butch Anderson Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the devoted friends of Sheriff Anderson. This scholarship is in honor of his dedication to the citizens of Dutchess County. This award is for a full- or part-time student who is studying in the law enforcement area. Community service/volunteerism is an important factor to be considered.

CAYSA Region IV Criminal Justice Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the New York Corrections and Youth Services Association for a full-time student majoring in criminal justice.

Chief Roger Doyle Memorial Scholarship in Criminal Justice – $500
This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Roger Doyle, chief of the Village of Rhinebeck Police Force for 26 years. The applicant must be a Dutchess County resident who is a full-time student with a minimum GPA of 2.75 and who has taken at least two courses in criminal justice.

John J. Durkin Memorial Scholarship – $500
John J. Durkin retired as President and CEO of the United Way of Dutchess County after 26 years. In honor of his retirement, the McCann Foundation established this annual award that is given, on a rotating basis, to a student from Dutchess, Marist or Vassar. The applicant must be a full-time student who shows by his or her academic background and/or experience that he/she would be successful in the human services field and is a Dutchess County resident.

Dutchess County Correctional Officers Benevolent Association – $800
This award is for a full- or part-time Dutchess County resident studying criminal justice with a 2.5 GPA or higher.

Dutchess County Deputy Sheriffs PBA Scholarship – $500
By encouraging students to pursue criminal justice, the Dutchess County Deputy Sheriffs PBA hopes that more college students will go into the field of law enforcement. This scholarship is awarded to a student who has taken at least two courses or is majoring in criminal justice, lives in Dutchess County, and shows academic achievement. First priority is given to a student who is a son or daughter of a police officer.

Patricia Krause Memorial Scholarship – $500
Patricia Krause was a professional staff member in the Behavioral Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College until her death in 1998. This scholarship was established by her friends and family to be awarded to a non-traditional student who has shown outstanding devotion to the field of human services and has earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident.

Vernell Charles 'Fuzzy' McClinton Jr. Memorial Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship was established by Exempt Firemen's Association of Poughkeepsie to honor Fuzzy, a member of their association and a teacher at Clarke Academy in Dobbs Ferry. The scholarship honors his passion for teaching, and is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in the Early Childhood program.

Mid-Hudson Association for the Education of Young Children Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the local chapter of the New York State affiliate of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. It is awarded to a student in the early childhood education program who has earned at least a 3.0 GPA.

Cathie Tarpey Rodriquez Memorial Scholarship – $500
Friends and colleagues established this award to memorialize Cathie's love for children. It is given to a full- or part-time, non-traditional student who is enrolled in one of the early childhood programs.

Sheriff Fred Scoralick Family Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was funded by Fred Scoralick's friends and associates upon the occasion of his retirement as Sheriff of Dutchess County. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident majoring in criminal justice and who has at least a 2.75 GPA.

Zaida Swan Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the family of Zaida Swan, a longtime early childhood teacher who loved working with DCC's youngest students. It is awarded to a full- or part-time student who has proven academic success and a commitment to working with young children.

Tolerance and Diversity Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the Gay Lesbian Straight Alliance, a student club at DCC. The applicant must have earned at least a 2.0 GPA and be committed to extending tolerance and increasing diversity. An essay demonstrating the applicant's understanding of any contemporary tolerance/diversity issue is required.

Elizabeth T. & Patrick J. Whalen Memorial Scholarship in Human Services – $500
This scholarship was established in 2001 by Elizabeth Whalen, a former member of the DCC professional staff, in memory of her parents. The applicant must be an active student pursuing a career in human services, who has demonstrated through volunteer activities on or off campus, a commitment to community service. He/she must be a full-time student who has earned a GPA of at least 3.25.

 

BUSINESS

The Business Administration Career Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established in 1981 to reward academic excellence by a full-time student studying business administration.

Business Community College Partnership Scholarship – $500
This scholarship, established by the local business community in partnership with the DCC Foundation, is for a full- or part-time high- achieving student in the business department.

Betty J. Canfield Memorial Scholarship – $500
The friends and family of Betty Canfield have established this scholarship for a full-time student in the accounting program with at GPA of at least 2.75.

Dutchess County Association of Realtors Scholarship – $500
This scholarship, founded by the Dutchess County Association of Realtors, is for a full-time student who has taken at least two courses in business administration at DCC with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

George N. Freedman Memorial Scholarship – $500
George Freedman was a professor in the Department of Business from 1965 until his death in 1986. His strong connections with the local retail community and the admiration of his peers and students led to the creation of this scholarship. It is awarded to a student who is enrolled in a business administration program.

Tony and Faith Krzywicki Business Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by Tony and Faith Krzywicki in honor of the Business Department faculty. Mr. Krzywicki is a faculty emeritus who was an original faculty member. He served as the first Business Department Head and taught at Dutchess for 28 years. The award is given to a full-time business student with at least a 2.5 GPA who is a Dutchess County resident; preference will be given to a City of Poughkeepsie resident.

Ginger Mancuso Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Ginger Mancuso, a DCC graduate who was actively involved with local restaurants and community functions. It is awarded to a non-traditional student in the business administration program who is motivated to pursue the fields of hospitality or tourism management. The applicant must have earned a GPA of at least 2.75.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The McCann Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident.

Millbrook Tribute Garden Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship was established by Millbrook Tribute Garden and is given to a full-time business student who is a Dutchess County resident; preference given to a resident of the Town of Washington.

Stop & Shop Supermarket Scholarship – $2,500
DCC students in either the retailing or business administration programs can qualify for this scholarship, which rewards academic excellence in those two curriculums. Students must be full-time and have at least a 3.8 GPA.

TEG Federal Credit Union Scholarship – $500
As a long-time community supporter, TEG Federal Credit Union generously endowed this scholarship to help students attain a college education. This award is given to a full- or part-time business student who has achieved academic excellence.

UHY LLP Certified Public Accountants Scholarship – $500
The regional office of this national accounting firm has had a longstanding association with DCC, and generously established a scholarship to be awarded to a full-time student who is enrolled in accounting.

Ulster Savings Bank Scholarship – $500
Understanding the need to help the students of the Hudson Valley, Ulster Savings Bank generously endowed this scholarship. This award is for a full- or part-time business student who has achieved academic excellence.

Westage Companies Scholarship – $500
The Westage Companies have been supporters of many local economic development efforts in Dutchess County. This scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time student in the business program, to encourage them to become a local business leader.

 

ENGINEERING, ARCHITECTURE AND COMPUTER TECHNOLOGIES

Charles E. Conklin Entrepreneurial Scholarship in Technology – $900
This scholarship was established to honor Charles E. Conklin, former CEO of Conklin Corporation. It is awarded to a full-time student who demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit and who is pursuing a degree in technology, science, or engineering with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Louis Greenspan Memorial Scholarship – $1,250
Louis Greenspan was a local businessman and contractor who was actively involved with projects at several area colleges. This scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time Dutchess or Ulster County resident studying in the architecture, engineering and computer technologies departments; preference given to a student studying architecture.

Gary J. Lindstrom Scholarship – $1,000
Gary J. Lindstrom was one of the three Engineering Plan A graduates in the first DCC class in 1960. Mr. Lindstrom established this scholarship to honor his engineering education at DCC and his interest in Studebakers. The scholarship is for a full-time student studying engineering science who is a resident of Dutchess County and who writes an essay related to Studebaker motorized vehicles.

Liscum McCormack VanVoorhis, Architects Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is established by Liscum, McCormack & VanVoorhis for a high-achieving architecture student who is either a full- or part-time student.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The McCann Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident.

Mid-Hudson Valley Land Surveyors Association Scholarship – $750
The Mid-Hudson Valley Land Surveyors Association established this scholarship to encourage students to pursue surveying. This award is for a full- or part-time student studying surveying or a related field.

Michael J. Morris Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the family and friends of Michael J. Morris to honor the 30th anniversary of his engineering firm, Morris Associates. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who has maintained at least a 3.0 GPA.

Daniel P. White Memorial Scholarship – $825
Daniel P. White was an engineer with IBM for many years. His colleagues established this scholarship to support a full-time student pursuing a degree in technology or a related field. A student applying for the scholarship needs a concentration in the physical sciences, mathematics or computer science, and high grades in these courses. Students should be enrolled in LAM, CPS or LAX.

 

ENGLISH AND HUMANITIES

Russell S. Cleverley Memorial Scholarship – $500
Russell Cleverley was not only a DCC graduate, but a member of the adjunct faculty as well. His family established this scholarship in his memory to be awarded to a full-time student majoring in English with at least a 3.0 GPA. Essay required.

The Italian Center Scholarship in Language Arts – $500
This scholarship has been established by the members of the Italian Center for a student who has shown outstanding devotion to the study of the Italian language. The applicant must have achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher. Essay required.

Jerry A. Lee Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the family of Dr. Jerry Lee, the third President of Dutchess Community College. It is awarded to a student interested in the humanities who also is academically motivated. Essay required.

William and Margaret Mair Memorial Scholarship – Two awards of $500 each
William and Margaret Mair, noted Poughkeepsie philanthropists, joined with the Edwin Gould Foundation to establish this scholarship, awarded to students who are enrolled in liberal arts/humanities and social sciences programs. Essay required.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The McCann Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident. Essay required.

Michael O'Dell Scholarship – $1,100
This scholarship was established by alumnus Michael O'Dell, class of '69, as a reflection of his gratitude for the excellent education and guidance he received at Dutchess Community College. This award is for a student studying in the area of liberal arts or humanities. Essay required.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society of Wappingers Falls Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established in 2001 by the members of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society of Wappingers Falls. This Society once provided religious and cultural support for Italian Americans. The applicant must be studying in the field of language arts and must have earned a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Essay required.

Edmund Webb Memorial Scholarship – $825
Edmund Webb was a community-minded resident who had great respect for the quality of education offered at DCC. He left a large bequest to be used for scholarships for DCC students. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is enrolled in liberal arts and sciences/humanities and social sciences. Essay required.

Richard White and Judith Lessinger Scholarship in Philosophy – $500
Judith Lessinger established this scholarship as a reflection of her gratitude to DCC faculty members who taught philosophy to her son, Richard White, while he was a student at the College. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student interested in the study of philosophy who has achieved at least a 3.0 GPA. Essay required.

 

HEALTH, PHYSICAL EDUCATION, ATHLETICS AND DANCE

Michael J. Cassetta Memorial Scholarship – $500
Mickey Cassetta was a tireless community volunteer who helped the DCC Foundation establish several successful fundraising events. This scholarship was established by his children. It is awarded to a full-time student who enjoys athletics and who has achieved at least a 3.0 GPA.

William E. Holland Scholarship – $500
Bill Holland was a member of the Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Dance Department for more than 30 years. His friends, colleagues and family members honored him upon his retirement by creating this scholarship. It is awarded to a male student who embraces the importance of athletics and has achieved at least a 3.0 GPA.

Sally D. Klein Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the family of Sally Klein (a longtime faculty member) and Dr. Holly Molella. It will be awarded to a student who is academically motivated and wants to pursue a career in the health education field. An essay discussing the applicant's experience in the health field and future plans is required.

Margaret Fondren Koniz Memorial Scholarship – $500
Margaret Fondren Koniz had a long career as a dietitian and medical nutrition specialist in the Hudson Valley region. Her family, friends, colleagues and clients honor her life's work with this scholarship. The award is presented to a student who is studying exercise science and wellness and who recognizes the importance of nutrition in the promotion of health and wellness through the lifespan. The recipient must have a GPA of at least 3.0.

The Mazzetti Family Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is funded through the friends and family of John Mazzetti, retired executive director of the DCC Foundation. This scholarship is awarded to a traditional student who has earned at least a 2.5 GPA and is a student athlete participating in a DCC team sport or the Dance Club.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The McCann Foundation Scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident.

Dr. Holly Molella Dance Scholarship – $500
The Dr. Holly Molella Dance Scholarship has been established by Dr. Molella, a longtime DCC faculty member. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who is involved in dance and is academically motivated.

Richard L. Skimin Memorial Scholarship – $500
Dick Skimin was an original faculty member at DCC, serving from 1958 through 1996 as department head for the Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Dance Department. Upon his retirement, his family, friends and colleagues established this scholarship to be awarded to a full-time student who has embraced the importance of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

Pat Zerbe Scholarship – $500
Patricia Zerbe is a retired faculty member of the Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Dance Department. Her friends, colleagues and family established this scholarship in her honor. The scholarship is awarded to a female student who is academically motivated, who pursues athletics and who has achieved a minimum 3.0 GPA.

 

HISTORY, GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMICS

Joseph H. and Miriam B. Gellert Memorial Scholarship – $500
Joseph H. Gellert, a Poughkeepsie attorney, was a member of the DCC Board of Trustees from 1972 through 1989. This scholarship was established by his family and friends, to be awarded to a history, government and economics student recommended by the department head.

Louis Greenspan Memorial Scholarship – Three awards of $1,250 each
Louis Greenspan was a local businessman and contractor who was actively involved with projects at several area colleges. The trustees of the Louis Greenspan Charitable Trust have established this fund to award three scholarships to full-time Dutchess or Ulster County residents studying history, government or economics who have achieved at least a 2.5 GPA.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. This scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident.

Vincent J. Tedone Memorial Scholarship – $500
Vincent Tedone was a Dutchess County Legislator who was greatly respected by his political colleagues. This scholarship is awarded to a part-time Dutchess County resident majoring in history, government or economics who has achieved at least a 2.75 GPA.

 

MATHEMATICS, PHYSICAL AND COMPUTER SCIENCES

The Melanie A. Kotes Memorial Chemistry Scholarship – $500
This and the following scholarship are awarded in memory of Melanie A. Kotes, who taught chemistry at DCC and was known for taking the time to help students be successful. This Chemistry scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time chemistry student with a 3.0 GPA or higher, who has successfully completed at least Chemistry 121. This scholarship is awarded through faculty nomination. Interested students should contact Susan Conrad.

The Melanie A. Kotes Memorial Science Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time student in the sciences and has successfully completed a minimum of three, four-credit science courses. Student should be high-achieving and show significant improvement and growth in his or her academics at DCC. Department faculty will identify and select the scholarship recipient; students may not apply for this scholarship. This scholarship is awarded through faculty nomination. Seth B. Lyon Memorial Scholarship – $500
Seth was an Adjunct MPCS Professor at the time of his death in March 2010. He was an avid hiker and environmentalist who enjoyed sharing his love of nature with his students. This award was established in loving memory of Seth by his wife, Mary, and will be given to a full- or part-time student who is pursuing a career in the environmental science field and who has a 3.0 GPA or higher.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time Dutchess County resident. A student applying for the MPCS McCann Foundation Scholarship needs to be able to demonstrate, through their course selection, that s/he is concentrating in the physical sciences, mathematics, or computer science, and has achieved high grades in these courses. Students should be enrolled in LAM, CPS or LAX.

Daniel P. White Memorial Scholarship – $825
Daniel P. White was an engineer with IBM for many years. His colleagues established this scholarship to support a full-time student pursuing a degree in technology or a related field. A student applying for the MPCS Daniel P. White Scholarship needs to be able to demonstrate, through their course selection, that s/he is concentrating in the physical sciences, mathematics, or computer science, and has achieved high grades in these courses. Students should be enrolled in LAM, CPS or LAX.

 

NURSING

The Dutchess County 40/8 Voiture #502 Nursing Scholarship – $500
This organization, affiliated with the American Legion, has fully endowed this scholarship, which is awarded to a full-time nursing student.

Dutchess County Home Bureau Scholarship – $500
The Dutchess County Home Bureau is an organization of women whose goals are community service, consumer education, health and safety education. The scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled in the nursing program.

Eileen Firman Memorial Scholarship – Two awards of $500 each
Eileen Firman, a dedicated nurse in the community for 38 years, showed concern for others that went far beyond her nursing career. Applicants need to be dedicated, caring and exhibit compassion in the nursing field. Students should demonstrate in their essay how they improve the quality of life for others by their acts of kindness and support. Students may be full- or part-time.

Sonny Frasier Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Arnold "Sonny" Frasier, a veteran of World War II and an American Legion member who served as chairman of the Legion's Nursing Committee. The applicant must be a Dutchess County resident registered in the nursing program, who has achieved at least a 2.5 GPA.

Drs. Florence H. and Elvin E. Gottdiener Memorial Scholarship – $500
Elvin Gottdiener was a prominent Poughkeepsie physician. This scholarship, established by his wife, Dr. Florence Gottdiener, is continued by his family today. It is awarded to a full-time student enrolled in a medically related field.

Blanche Knapp Hart Memorial Scholarship – $500
Blanche graduated from The Vassar Brothers Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. She served in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during WWII. While she spent her life here in the Hudson Valley, much of her time was devoted to the family business, Hart Orchards on Dutchess Turnpike. Nursing was her first love. This award will be presented to a full- or part-time nursing student who has demonstrated academic success and a passion for the career.

Hudson River State Hospital Nurses Alumni Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is awarded by the Hudson River State Hospital Nurses Alumni to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident enrolled in Nursing.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The scholarship is awarded to a Dutchess County resident.

Millbrook Tribute Garden, Inc. Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship was established by the Millbrook Tribute Garden and is given to a nursing student who is a Dutchess County resident; preference will be given to a resident of the Town of Washington.

Margaret Miller Memorial Scholarship – $500
This nursing scholarship was established by Sigmund Miller, a Pleasant Valley resident and businessman, in memory of his wife, Margaret, who was a nurse.

Martha Reifler Myers Memorial Nursing Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship was started by Charles E. Conklin, a local businessman, to honor Martha for her foresight and generosity in helping start Conklin Industries. This award is for a nursing student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and the necessary personal attributes to become a dedicated nurse.

Jean D. Rock Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is established by the family of Jean D. Rock, a local nurse who lost her battle with a Glioblastoma Multiforme brain tumor in June 2008. Jean was a dedicated and highly skilled nurse, whose primary concern was her kindness to her patients and their families. This scholarship is for a student who has a proven academic record, exemplifies outstanding nurse/patient relationships and has shown a commitment to the nursing profession.

Vassar Brothers Medical Center Scholarship – Up to $3,500
Vassar Brothers Medical Center is dedicated and committed to the advancement of the nursing profession through support of individuals who are enrolled in the nursing program at DCC by sponsoring the Vassar Brothers Medical Center Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a second-year student who has achieved a 3.0 GPA and has completed two semesters of nursing science courses. Applicants must submit two faculty recommendations, a personal letter of recommendation and a nominee statement that discusses career goals and why the scholarship is important. The candidate also must be interviewed by a VBMC representative and demonstrate successful completion of pre-employment requirements. Following graduation, applicants must agree to work at VBMC for a minimum of two years.

 

PERFORMING, VISUAL ARTS AND COMMUNICATIONS

George Bernstein Memorial Scholarship – $825
George was associated with the Poughkeepsie Journal for most of his professional career, serving as a reporter, city editor and business editor. His friends and colleagues established this scholarship to be awarded to a full-time student enrolled in communications and media arts.

Dutchess Heritage Quilters Scholarship – $1,200
This organization sponsors and hosts an outstanding quilt exhibition at Dutchess Community College every other year. The Dutchess Heritage Quilters Scholarship is awarded to a full-time, non-traditional student.

The Clarence J. "Woody" Ferrier Theatre Scholarship – $500
Talented in virtually all aspects of community theater, Mr. Ferrier earned an associate degree (with honors) in performing arts at age 66. This scholarship was established to honor Mr. Ferrier's dedication to the craft. This scholarship is awarded to someone who shows the same commitment. Given to a non-traditional full- or part-time student with at least a 3.0 GPA, this award will celebrate one aspect of the creative process of theater.

Harold and Dorothy Hayward Memorial Scholarship – $500
Established by the Hayward family, this scholarship is named in memory of noted local engineer Harold Hayward and his wife Dorothy. Created to honor Mr. and Mrs. Hayward's love of amateur theater, this scholarship is awarded to a student in the performing arts program who has been an active participant in some phase of a live theater production. The recipient must be a full-time student who has achieved at least a 3.0 GPA.

Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Scholarship – $500
As an organization dedicated to helping the local community, Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union established this scholarship to help local students attend DCC. It is awarded to a full- or part-time student who is academically motivated and pursuing a degree in communications.

Lidia, Agostino and Mary V. Imperatori Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship, which was established by Susan L. Fil, niece of Mary Imperatori, is for a full- or part-time student enrolled in the performing arts.

JTN Scholarship – $1000
This award is for a student who is a graduate of either John Jay or Roy C. Ketcham High Schools in the Wappingers School District. One scholarship shall be awarded to a student demonstrating financial need, has a strong academic record and demonstrates an interest in the arts or theatre.

Peter Klose Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was created by friends and colleagues of Peter Klose, and fully endowed by his daughter, Erika Hammar-Klose, to memorialize Peter's many contributions as a member of the DCC visual arts faculty. It is awarded to a full-time student who has taken at least one photography course.

Karen Lee Knapp Memorial Scholarship – $500
Karen Lee Knapp, an alumnus of DCC, was an exceptional graphic artist. Her family and friends established this scholarship for a full-time student studying commercial art who has achieved at least a 2.75 GPA.

Russell Kraft Memorial Scholarship – $500
The Mid-Hudson Community Orchestra has established this music scholarship, to be awarded to a DCC student instrumentalist.

McCann Foundation Scholarship – $500
The McCann Foundation was established by James J. McCann, a local feed and grain dealer. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time student who is a Dutchess County resident.

Lynette McKinney Memorial Scholarship – $700
This scholarship was created by the husband of Lynette McKinney to memorialize her many contributions as a member of the DCC visual arts faculty. It is awarded to a student at least a 3.0 GPA.

Laura Lucille Staats Memorial Scholarship – $750
This scholarship was established to honor Laura Lucille Staats, a non-traditional graduate who was interested in art. It is awarded to a full-time, non-traditional student who is enrolled in commercial art or a related field and is a resident of Dutchess County.

 

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CONTINUING DCC STUDENTS

Academic Achievement Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was initiated by the 2001-02 Educationally Disadvantaged Student Committee. The scholarship is awarded to a student who has shown growth and persistence, and who has completed 24 credits or more at DCC, six of which must be credit-equivalent courses with a lower-than 100 designation.

Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship – $1,200
The Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship is awarded to a student whose parent, guardian, grandparent, child or grandchild is a DCC alum.

Association of Women at DCC Scholarship – $550
The Association of Women at Dutchess Community College encourages leadership and cooperation among women in community colleges. This scholarship will be awarded to a full-time female student with a GPA of at least 3.0. An essay entitled "Where I see myself in five years" is required.

Association of Women at DCC Scholarship – $500
The Association of Women at Dutchess Community College encourages leadership and cooperation among women in community colleges. This scholarship will be awarded to a part-time female student with a GPA of at least 3.0. An essay entitled "Where I see myself in five years" is required.

Trudy Hankinson Briggs AAUW Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by Ken Briggs, husband of Trudy. Trudy taught for 25 years in the Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls school districts and served as principal of Vassar Road Elementary School. She served as president of the American Association of University Women and was a community activist. This scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time student who has proven academic success along with some community service.

William J. Buckner Exempt Firemen's Scholarship – Two awards of $1,000 each
William J. Buckner served as President of the Exempt Firemen's Association for more than 20 years. He was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, serving in the O.H. Booth Hose Company. Mr. Buckner passed away in September 2007 and the scholarship was in honor of his dedication to the association. One scholarship is awarded to the son or daughter of a social member of the Exempt Fireman's Association. The other award is for a volunteer firefighter or the son or daughter of volunteer firefighter who is a member of the Exempt Firemen's Association. The recipient must be a student who has earned a GPA of 2.50 or higher. An essay on the importance of fire prevention and education is required.

Phyllis L. Cady Memorial Scholarship – $550
It was stated in Ms. Cady's will that the student awarded this scholarship "shall believe in the principles of the United States Government and his or her manner of being shall be in conformity with the standards of society." In addition, the applicant must be a full-time student who has achieved at least a 3.0 grade point average.

Alexander Cutonilli Memorial Scholarship – $1,500
Alexander Cutonilli served in the DCC Admissions Office from 1967 until his death in 1994. A Hyde Park resident, he was committed to his community, students and the Dutchess County Counseling Association. The award is for a full-time Dutchess County student who has demonstrated community involvement.

Dutchess County Youth Board Community Service Scholarships – Two awards, $1,000 and $500
The $1,000 scholarship is open to full-time students and the $500 scholarship is open to part-time students. All applicants need to be matriculated students who are Dutchess County residents while having graduated from a DC High School or Carmel High School, been home-schooled, or obtained a GED in DC and are not more than 25 years of age. Applicant needs at least a 2.8 GPA and must submit an essay describing his/her contributions to community service through active volunteerism. Two letters of recommendation from Dutchess Community College faculty are also required.

Dutchess County Youth Board Scholarships – Two awards, $1,000 and $500
The $1,000 scholarship is open to full-time students and the $500 scholarship is open to part-time students. All applicants need to be matriculated students who are Dutchess County residents while having graduated from a DC High School or Carmel High School, been home-schooled, or obtained a GED in DC and are not more than 25 years of age. Applicant needs at least a 2.8 GPA and must submit an essay describing how he/she has overcome some specific hardship or difficult odds to be successful in life. Two letters of recommendation from Dutchess Community College faculty are also required.

The William Jeff Edwards Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship is established by a committee under the leadership of Mike Pesacov to honor and remember the outstanding work done for at-risk youth by their friend and colleague Jeff Edwards. The award is given to a full- or part-time student from an "at risk" background who has worked hard to succeed.

Sadie and William Effron Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the children of Sadie and William Effron to honor their parents' contributions to DCC and the community. The scholarship is awarded to a non-traditional student attending on a part-time basis.

Nan Gingher Memorial Scholarship – $500
Nancy "Nan" Gingher was a lifetime resident of Shenanigan Farm in Stanfordville, N.Y. and a long-time psychotherapist and staff member at Dutchess Community College until her retirement in 1989. This scholarship is awarded to a student who is eligible to receive disability services at the College and who has a physical or mobile disability. The applicant must have at least a 2.5 GPA.

Bernard Handel Community Leadership Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is involved in community service work. This award is being made in honor of Steven V. Lant, the 2012 recipient of the Bernard Handel Community Leadership Award.

Helen and Henry Katula Memorial Scholarship – Two awards of $500 each
Maryanne Keller-Chai, DCC's 1984 Commencement speaker, established this scholarship in honor of her parents, Helen and Henry Katula. It is awarded to a full-time student who has demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and leadership skills.

Mid-Hudson Sikh Cultural Society - September 11 Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the Mid-Hudson Sikh Cultural Society to honor those who volunteered during the September 11 tragedy. It is awarded to a student in any degree program who has achieved at least a 2.5 GPA. Community volunteerism must be an important part of this student's life.

Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Community Service Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established to help local students who are members of the credit union attend DCC. It is awarded to a full-time student who is academically motivated and demonstrates a commitment to community.

Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by the Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union to help local students who are members of the credit union attend DCC. It is awarded to a full-time student who is academically motivated.

The Moody Family Scholarship – $500
Dr. F. Kennon Moody served as a teacher and administrator at DCC from 1974 until 1997. This award is for a non-traditional full-time student enrolled in a degree or certificate program and has not attended a post-secondary institution other than DCC in the last five years.

The Jean and Dr. Carl Needy Scholarship – $500
Jean Needy, a longtime DCC Foundation board member, established this award for a high-achieving woman of outstanding integrity.

Nine Partners Lions Club Scholarship – $500
This scholarship has been established by the members of this Lions Club for a student who resides in the Town of Clinton in Dutchess County. The applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Sgt. Mark C. Palmateer Memorial Scholarship – $500
This scholarship was established by Rob Weiss and other friends and supporters of Mark Palmateer, who served his country in Afghanistan with dignity and pride. The award is given to a full- or part-time student who is academically motivated.

Allan E. Rappleyea and Julia M. Rappleyea Scholarship – $3,500
This scholarship was established by the family and devoted friends of Allan and Julia Rappleyea. Allan Rappleyea served the College for decades, on the board of trustees and as the College attorney. This scholarship is in honor of their dedication to DCC and education in general. This award is for a full- or part-time student who applies themselves diligently to his or her job, as well as to academics. Community service/volunteerism and financial need are important factors to be considered. Preference is given to a student living in Poughkeepsie.

Rhinebeck Savings Bank Scholarship – $2,500
This award is for a student from either Dutchess or Ulster counties who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and has a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Financial need is a consideration.

Rose and Kiernan Charitable Foundation Scholarship – $1,000
This scholarship is awarded to a student who is pursuing a career in the field of health care, wellness, education or business.

Catherine Reeck Shanks Scholarship – $500
This scholarship has been funded by The George T. Whalen, Jr. Foundation to honor Catherine Reeck Shanks, a founding officer of the Foundation and a 1979 graduate of Dutchess Community College. It is awarded to a full-time student who is academically motivated; preference given to residents of the Millbrook School District.

George A. Strba Charitable Trust Endowment Scholarship – Two awards of $1,400 each
This scholarship is awarded to two continuing DCC students who graduated from Poughkeepsie High School.
