New Scholarships for 2008-2009
Academic Scholarships Department of Business Westage Companies Scholarship One Award of $500 The Westage Companies have been supporters of many local economic development efforts in Dutchess County. This scholarship is awarded to a full- or part-time 2nd year student in the Business Administration program in the hopes that they will become local business leaders. Health, Physical Education, Athletics and Dance Margaret Fondren Koniz Scholarship One Award of $500 Margaret Fondren Koniz has had a long career as a dietitian and medical nutrition specialist in the Hudson Valley region. Her family, friends, colleagues, and clients honor her life’s work with this scholarship. The award is presented to a second-year student with a minimum of 24 credits who is studying exercise science and wellness and who recognizes the importance of nutrition in the promotion of health and wellness through the lifespan. The recipient must have a CPA of at least 3.00. Graduate Scholarships Students who are graduating from Dutchess Community College in either May or August of 2008 and who are transferring to another college or university for the Fall 2008 Semester are eligible to apply for the scholarships listed below. Mildred I. Washington Memorial Graduate Scholarship One award of $1,000 Allyn J. Washington established this scholarship in memory of his wife. It is awarded to a graduating student with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, who plans to transfer to a four-year school or university and major in teaching. Special Scholarships (offered to students registering at DCC for the 2008-2009 academic year.) Trudy Hankinson Briggs AAWU Scholarship One Award of $500 This scholarship was established by Mr. Ken Briggs, husband of Trudy Hankinson Briggs. Trudy taught for 25 years in the Poughkeepsie and Wappingers Falls school districts and served as principal of Vassar Road Elementary School for seven years. She served as president of the American Association of University Women and was a community activist. This scholarship is awarded to a full or part-time, 2nd year student who has proven academic success and some community service. William J. Buckner Exempt Firemen’s Scholarship Two awards of $1,000 William J. Buckner served as President of the Exempt Firemen’s Association for over 20 years. He was a volunteer firefighter for the city of Poughkeepsie Fire Department, serving in the O.H. Booth Hose Company. Mr. Buckner passed away in September of 2007. Upon his death, members of the Association voted to name the scholarship the “William J. Buckner Memorial Scholarship” in honor of his dedication to the association. His favorite slogan was “Imagine That!” The first scholarship is awarded to a firefighter or the child of a firefighter in good standing at any fire district in Dutchess County. The recipient must be a second year student with a CPA of 2.50 or higher and write an essay on the importance of fire prevention and education. The second recipient must be a member of the Exempt Firemen’s Association or the son or daughter of a member. The recipient must be a second year student with a CPA of 2.50 or higher and write an essay on the importance of fire prevention and education. George A. Strba Charitable Trust Endowment Scholarship Two Awards of $1400 The George A. Strba Charitable Trust has established this scholarship to be awarded each year to two graduates of Poughkeepsie High School who will be entering their second year at Dutchess Community College. |
