Welcome to Nursing PROGRAM GOAL The Dutchess Community College graduate nurse will be a competent health care professional who practices within the scope of the New York State Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association Code of Ethics and the National League for Nursing Core Components and Competencies. Philosophy
Beliefs About Education The nursing faculty believes that education must be flexible and responsive to the needs of the individual and society. The learner is a unique being of any age, who is a product of cultural and social diversity. Education is an on-going process which facilitates learning in both traditional and non- traditional ways through interaction with the environment. Learning is an active, individual process based upon the principles of readiness, motivation, reinforcement, and evaluation. Learning creates awareness and understanding of concepts. The individual's prior knowledge and experiences are utilized in the learning process in a variety of ways. These changes can be assessed and measured. Synthesis of concepts has taken place when the learner demonstrates their application in new situations. The student learns from interaction with others. Learning changes behavior, both subjectively and objectively. Utilizing a variety of educational settings, support services, and technology, the educator serves as the facilitator in this learning process. Beliefs About Nursing Health is a purposeful, adaptive response to internal and external stressors in order to satisfy basic needs and achieve successfully the tasks of the developmental stages. Illness is a disturbed adaptive response to internal and external stressors, resulting in disharmony and the inability to satisfy basic needs and achieve successfully the tasks of the developmental stages.
The nurse practices in a changing health care delivery system as the individual's advocate. The practice of nursing provides an essential service to society. The nurse must display respect for human dignity and individual differences. Nursing assists individuals and families at all positions on the health care continuum. Nursing coordinates its care with other health care disciplines. The cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of knowledge are the basis of nursing practice. Nursing applies concepts from the sciences and humanities to the nursing process which is the framework of nursing practice. The evolution of nursing practice parallels the changing trends of the health care delivery system. The nurse is sensitive to individuals' needs and how they are influenced by health care. Beliefs About Nursing Education Nursing education incorporates knowledge from other disciplines and i Nursing education is grounded in a conceptual framework which provides the foundation for the nursing curriculum. Nursing education incorporates trends in health care. Nursing education prepares the individual for the practice of providing competent nursing care for individuals and their families experiencing problems along the health illness continuum. Beliefs About Associate Degree Nursing Associate degree nursing programs provide learning experiences in a variety of settings. The associate degree nurse is prepared to provide the core competencies essential to the work of the entry level Registered Nurse defined by the National League for Nursing. This includes the core components of Professional Behaviors, Communication, Assessment, Clinical Decision-Making, Caring Interventions, Teaching & Learning, Collaboration, and Managing Care. Organizing Framework The organizing framework of the Dutchess Community College nursing curriculum includes Basic Human Needs, Developmental Stages, Stress and Adaptation, Health-Illness Continuum, Nursing Process, and the National League for Nursing Core Components and their Competencies for graduates of associate degree programs. |
