Free Music Event to Feature Instrument Sampling, Concert by Violinist

August 23, 2010 – The Music School at DCC will host Music Exploration Saturday on Sept. 4 at the College’s Poughkeepsie campus. The event is an opportunity for children and adults to sample instruments, audition for ensembles, enjoy a free concert and participate in the Make-a-Melody Workshop.

The Music School at DCC is part of the College’s Office of Community Services and has offered non-credit music education since 1972.

Trial lessons will allow potential students of all ages to sample various musical instruments, and auditions will be held for the school’s chamber music group and jazz ensemble. In addition, parents and children can enjoy a Kindermusik demonstration. Instrument sampling and auditions will begin at 11 a.m.

At 1 p.m., accomplished violinist and former Music School at DCC Suzuki student Kate Lisman will perform with cellist Rylie Harrod. The concert will conclude with the Make-a-Melody Workshop, which will give children the opportunity to create their own musical composition and leave with a CD of their piece.

A New York City native, Lisman regularly performs in the U.S. and Europe. She is a fellow of the Orchestra Europa and a member of both the Orpheus Sinfonia and the Situation Opera Orchestra. Lisman was awarded a full scholarship at the Max Aronoff Viola Festival and was a participant at the Rencontres Musicales Internationales des Graves. She holds a bachelor of music degree, has completed her licentiate of the Royal Academy of Music and is in her second year of postgraduate studies at the Academy.

The event will be held in the James and Betty Hall Theatre on DCC’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. For more information about Music Exploration Saturday, contact school director Julie Wegener at (845) 431-8916 or
