Twenty-Seven Earn Coveted DCC Scholarship

October 17, 2014 – Twenty-seven Dutchess Community College freshmen were formally awarded the 2014 Charles E. and Mabel E. Conklin Scholarship for Academic Excellence recently, joining family members and DCC staff members for a luncheon on campus. When combined with the Conklin scholars who began at DCC last fall, 64 students currently are benefiting from the initiative.

The Conklin Scholarship provides up to two years of full tuition for any Dutchess County high school student who graduates in the top 10% of his or her class. DCC attracts more top 10% students from Dutchess County than does any other single college or university. Conklin scholars and other high-achieving students have gone on to top four-year colleges – including Cornell, RPI, Smith, Vassar, Marist and SUNY schools - after graduating from DCC.

Conklin Scholar Michael Knowles of Beacon is the third sibling in his family to receive the scholarship. His mother, Virginia, said the initiative has had a wonderful impact on her family and thanked the Conklins for providing the opportunity.

“We’re very grateful and appreciative that people can do something like this,” she said. “It’s helped us out so much financially, and it has put us in a position to be able to send each of our kids to a four-year school after they finish at DCC. This also has taught them a lesson about giving and generosity. Hopefully if they’re able later in life, they will give back as well.”

The scholarship is made possible by Charles and Mabel (Betty) Conklin of Pleasant Valley and the DCC Foundation.
