September 29, 2014 – DCC English faculty member John Desmond will give a lecture on a film adaptation of author Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451,” the subject of this year’s Big Read initiative. The presentation is free and open to the public, and will be held at the Adriance Memorial Library in Poughkeepsie on Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
Desmond will discuss the art of adaptation before comparing parts of Bradbury’s original narrative with their corresponding scenes in the 1966 film version directed by Francois Truffaut.
Desmond is the co-author of “Adaptation: Studying Film and Literature,” a textbook that describes the overlapping histories of literature and film, and introduces the art of adapting literature for film.
The 2014 Big Read project is administered by the Poughkeepsie Public Library District, with a host of community partners, through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest and with support from local sponsors.
