October 21, 2011 – A recent collaboration between Dutchess Community College and Nubian Directions II, Inc., lead agency for the Beacon Community Resource Center (formerly the Beacon Community Center) has given local residents another convenient way to access DCC’s English as a Second Language (ESL) and GED classes.
The reopening of the community center on West Center Street is the result of a partnership developed between several local not-for-profit agencies and organizations to provide educational and health-related services to City of Beacon residents.
DCC’s GED class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 p.m., its ESL class Mondays and Wednesdays from 6-9 p.m. and its GED/Soft Employment Skills course will take place Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuition for the courses is $20. Students can register through Nov. 8 for this session of classes, which run through late December. Another session will begin Jan. 9, 2012 and end in April.
In addition to offering GED and ESL classes, DCC is part of the New Directions YouthBuild AmeriCorps Partnership, a non-traditional alternative education program run by Nubian Directions, which gives low-income young adults ages 16 to 24 the opportunity to earn a GED and learn valuable job and leadership skills, while building affordable housing for low-income residents.
