Women's History Month Activities Planned at DCC

Release date: February 19, 2008

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -- Dutchess Community College has a slate of activities lined up in March to recognize Women’s History Month.

The celebration begins two days early on Feb. 28 with a Lyceum featuring Patrice Gaines called “What People in Prison Have Taught Me About Being Free.” During the presentation, Gaines, an award-winning journalist and former Washington Post reporter, will discuss her transformation from a heroin user who spent time in jail for possession, to a confident journalist, author and national speaker. The talk will begin at 12:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre in Dutchess Hall on the DCC main campus.

DCC will host its 12th annual “Math and Science Matter … Especially for Young Women” event on March 1. It provides hands-on workshops in science, technology, engineering and math developed by DCC faculty designed to engage young women and encourage them to explore career opportunities in those fields. Also, there will be workshops for parents as well as middle school math and science teachers. The program is open to students from the Hudson Valley in grades 5-9. There is a $5 registration fee. Visit www.sunydutchess.edu/msfair to complete mandatory registration. Contact Susan LaFosse at 845-431-8000, ext. 3787 for more information.

On March 6 at 12:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre, Anya Kamenetz will present “Time to Stand Up: Why the Youth Vote will Rock in ’08.” She will discuss voters ages 18 to 31 who appear to be more engaged and empowered who will outnumber the baby boomers at the polls in 2008.
