Works by DCC student artists include a charcoal self-portrait by Raymond Arnold of LaGrange and a color giclee photographic print “The Masquerade” by Joseph Berhosky of Poughkeepsie, both from the spring 2007 SUNY Student Exhibition, and an untitled abstract painting by Allison Wiand of Poughkeepsie from SUNY’s fall 2006 Student Exhibition. As exhibitors, the DCC students will be eligible for three “Best in Show” awards of $1,000 and three “Honorable Mention” awards of $500. Judging for these awards is arranged by Richard Schwartz, chairman of the New York State Council of the Arts. The SUNY student art shows were inaugurated in 2002 to bring the work of SUNY’s most talented student artists to a wider audience. The works for fall and spring shows are chosen by faculty in the art programs at SUNY campuses, with works for the Best of SUNY shows chosen by jurors from the New York State Council on the Arts. The exhibition is characterized by the wide range of media used to create the art. The traditional areas of drawing, painting, photography, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture are enhanced by the addition of digital imaging and mixed media installations. DCC student artists created their work in studio art classes in the College’s commercial art program, part of the Department of Performing, Visual Arts, and Communications. Seven DCC student artists in addition to Arnold, Berhosky and Wiand have had work featured in SUNY-wide shows in Albany this year. The fall 2006 SUNY Student Art Exhibition included ceramics by Dawna Cservak and a drawing by David Gonzalez, both of Wappingers Falls, and digital work by Lacey Rodgers and Nelson Wallace, both of Poughkeepsie. The spring 2007 SUNY Art Exhibition featured color digital photography by Patrick Bard of Hopewell Junction and digital work by Nicole Fischetti of Poughkeepsie. The Best of SUNY Exhibit runs through September 3. SUNY Chancellor John R. Ryan will hold a reception to honor the artists on Thursday, May 24.
