Ecosystem Studies President Schlesinger to Give Earth Day Presentation at DCC

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies President William Schlesinger will give a lecture at DCC on April 22 titled “Environmental Challenges Facing the Next President.”

The speech will focus on the major environmental issues facing the next U.S. president, including climate change, water and energy availability, and environmental contamination. Schlesinger will also discuss how these issues will affect the ecosystems in the Hudson River Valley, and what can be done to foster a better environment for future generations.

Before coming to the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Schlesinger was the James B. Duke Professor of Biogeochemistry and Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences at Duke University. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College and his Ph. D. from Cornell University. Schlesinger is author or co-author of more than 180 scientific papers and a university-level textbook. His research findings have been featured on NOVA, National Public Radio, CNN, Discover magazine, and National Geographic.

The presentation will take place at 12:30 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre in Dutchess Hall on DCC’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. For more information, call the DCC Office of Student Activities at 845-431-8050.

Founded in 1957, Dutchess Community College is a two-year community college celebrating its 50th anniversary of excellence and service to the residents of Dutchess County. It is part of the State University of New York and is one of 30 community colleges in the state system. The College offers a wide variety of associate degree programs, as well as career programs in major technical, human service and business areas. The College also offers non-credit courses through its Office of Community Services to meet the continuing education needs of civic, cultural, business and professional groups and the community at large. The main campus is at 53 Pendell Road in Poughkeepsie, while the Dutchess South extension site is in Hollowbrook Park, Building #4 at 31 Marshall Road in Wappingers Falls.
