DCC to Reinvent Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice' with Nazi Germany Setting

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – Stephen Press, who holds the Dutchess Community College Endowed Chair in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, will direct DCC Performing Arts students in a new production of Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice” where the setting is no longer Italy, but Nazi Germany in 1938.

The play is meant to coincide with the visit of Anna Sommer, a lecturer and doctoral candidate in the department of Jewish Studies at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. Sommer will give two lectures at DCC on April 10.

Performances of the play will take place April 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m. and April 12 and 13 at 2 p.m. in the James and Betty Hall Theatre in Dutchess Hall on DCC’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. For more information, call 845-431-8696.

Founded in 1957, Dutchess Community College is a two-year community college celebrating its 50th anniversary of excellence and service to the residents of Dutchess County. It is part of the State University of New York and is one of 30 community colleges in the state system.
