DCC Wins State Award for Young Women's Math and Science Program Release date August 1, 2007
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The State University of New York Council for University Advancement (SUNY CUAD) presented Dutchess Community College with one of its 2007 Awards for Excellence. The College received a Judges Citation in the Community Relations Programs category for its work to promote the College’s “Math and Science Matter for Young Women” event. DCC’s promotions for the program included a postcard, billboards, press releases distributed to approximately 60 news outlets, half-hour interviews on two local radio programs and a flyer e-mailed to schools, teachers, guidance counselors and past participants. The 11th Annual Math and Science Matter for Young Women program, held March 3, gave young women throughout the Hudson Valley the chance to explore career opportunities in math and science through hands-on workshops in a college setting. The 2007 pre-registration for the event attracted 340 young women in grades 5-9, who participated in events such as Ocean Detectives, Chemical Wizardry, Soldering for Electronics and Become a DNA Detective, among many others. The Awards for Excellence call for entries was sent out in January to SUNY CUAD’s 800-plus members, and by April, host coordinators had selected judges for their respective categories. Out of 180 total entries in 21 categories, 57 winners were chosen. The awards recognize high-level work performed daily by institutional advancement professionals within public higher education. Founded in 1957, Dutchess Community College is a two-year community college celebrating its 50th anniversary of excellence and service to the residents of Dutchess County.
