Two DCC Students Nominated to Phi Theta Kappa All-USA Academic Team

David ConklinDutchess Community College graduates Dmitriy Yermolayev of Poughkeepsie and Matthew Murray of Hyde Park were honored at the annual DCC Convocation on Thursday, May 17 for their nomination to the Phi Theta Kappa All-USA and All-State Academic Teams. Yermolayev and Murray were also honored last month by the State University of New York Chancellor John R. Ryan and New York Community College Trustees Association President Anton N. Kasanof for their inclusion in the New York State All-Academic Team – Yermolayev as a member of the First Team, Murray the Second Team. Yermolayev and Murray were also awarded DCC Alumni Association Graduate Scholarships at the Convocation on Thursday.

Phi Theta Kappa New York Academic Team MedalPhi Theta Kappa is an academic honor society for students of two-year colleges. It is the largest honor society in American higher education, with more than 1.5 million members and 1,200 chapters located in all 50 of the United States, U.S. territories, British Virgin Islands, Canada, Germany, Marshall Islands, Micronesia, and Palau.

Yermolayev, who attended Arlington High School, graduated from DCC on May 17 with an associate in science degree in the business administration transfer program. A President’s List student with a GPA of 3.95, Yermolayev has been active at DCC as a member of the DCC’s Alpha Psi Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, president of the Delta Zeta chapter of Alpha Beta Gamma (an international honor society for business students), and a representative of the Student Government Association where he served on the fair representation and public relations committees. In March 2007, he was a delegate to the National Model United Nations representing the Hudson River Group – an intercollegiate team comprised of students from DCC and Vassar College. Yermolayev was the recipient of a Dutchess United Educators (DUE) Award for Academic Excellence and an Edwin A. Ulrich Charitable Trust Scholarship.

Murray graduated on May 17 from DCC with an associate in arts degree in liberal arts and sciences/humanities. He is a President’s List student with a GPA of 3.83, member of Phi Theta Kappa, and served as president of DCC’s Political Science/International Relations club. He participated in the National Model United Nations in 2006 and 2007. He served as head delegate at the 2007 Model UN simulation in New York City, where the Hudson River Group was recognized with several Outstanding Delegation and Position Papers awards. Murray is recipient of a DUE Award for Academic Excellence and the Eugene Sheridan Award presented by the DCC’s department of history, government and economics. In 2006, he was chosen to represent his research paper in the arts division as one of three finalists at the annual Beacon Conference, a scholastic competition for students from two-year schools in the Mid-Atlantic region.

DCC’s Alpha Psi Kappa chapter of Phi Theta Kappa inducted 150 new members at a ceremony on May 3. Students who have a GPA of 3.5 and have completed at least 12 hours of coursework leading to an associate degree are invited to apply for membership.
