DCC Music School Offers Free Tuition

Release date May 31, 2007

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -- Dutchess Community College Music School is offering free tuition to its summer music classes to a limited number of students, who demonstrate a serious interest in the study of music and meet economic eligibility criteria.

According to Julie Wegener, DCC Music School director, this opportunity is part of the school’s MusicLink Scholarship Program, now in its seventh year. Examples of classes offered to students in this program include vocal technique, jazz ensembles, songwriting, musical composition, piano improvisation, chamber music, hip hop dance, and two, one-hour classes introducing students to West African and Native American drumming.  There are also group instrumental classes for beginning flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, beginning and intermediate trumpet, and intermediate violin/viola.

Students must have the endorsement of their school music teachers and must document their eligibility for the public school district’s free lunch program. Students on the reduced price lunch program may apply to take classes at half tuition.

The DCC Foundation administers the MusicLink funds for the DCC Music School Scholarship program. Gifts to this program include the Bentley Holden Fund, the Andrew R. DeMar Family Foundation, the Kanter-Kallman Foundation, and a gift from Allyn J. Washington.

Teachers or parents of students interested in a scholarship for this summer’s classes may contact Wegener at (845)431-8916 or Wegener@sunydutchess.edu.

Founded in 1972, Dutchess Community College Music School offers non-credit music education to students of all ages, from infants to seniors.
