Deadline Nears for DCC High School Essay Competition

The April 1 deadline is nearing for the annual High School Essay Competition sponsored by the Dutchess Community College Department of English and Humanities and the Mid-Hudson English/Language Arts Council. The competition is open to students in grades 9 through 12 from throughout the Mid-Hudson area. Funded in part by the DCC Foundation Mini-Grant program, the competition was developed to foster a close relationship between DCC English faculty and English teachers at local high schools. The competition culminates in an awards ceremony at the College on Saturday, May 19 from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. in Bowne Hall. Prizes are $50 for the best essay in each category, a gift certificate to the winner’s teacher mentor, and $25 for the runner-up. All winners should expect to present their papers at the ceremony.

Essays will be judged in the following categories: International Affairs; National Affairs; Literary Criticism of Prose, Poetry, and Drama; and Creative Writing. Please note that Creative Writing is an optional submission that will be judged separately from a student’s essay. Students must submit an essay in order to also submit a creative piece. No creative pieces will be accepted unless accompanied by an essay. All entries must be typed double-spaced on 8.5” X 11” white paper with one inch margins and 10 to 12 point fonts using MLA or APA style for references. The maximum length is 1,000 words (three to five pages). Each paper will be read by two scholars. Evaluation guidelines include quality of content, development, organization, language, and conventions.

Submissions must be received by April 1, 2007. Submission should be sent to Jacqueline Goffe-McNish, High School Essay Competition, Dutchess Community College, 53 Pendell Road, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. No email submissions will be accepted. Paper must include the student’s name, home address, name and address of school, name and telephone number of mentor, title of paper, title of course for which the paper was written.
