DCC April Events Span the Arts, the Environment, and Campus-Community Outreach

Dutchess Community College plans a full schedule for the month of April with events spanning the arts, the environment, and community outreach. Artists’ reception on Thursday, April 12 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

In Plain Sight. Drawings by Tony Ferri, Carol Struve, Juan Garcia-Nunez, Sarah Greer-Mecklem, Bruce Bundock, and Rick Finelstein. The Gallery is located at the north end of campus in the Allyn J. Washington Center for Science and Art, room 150-153. Matt Finley and Rio Jazz: Come join DCC to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month and the 20th Anniversary Show of Matt Finley and Rio Jazz. Led by arranger and flugelhorn soloist Matt Finley, Rio Jazz will be playing tracks for Matt’s new CD, Brazilian Wish. Refreshments will be served. This event, part of DCC’s Lyceum Series, is co-sponsored by the Student Government Association and the Music Performance Fund, as administered by Local 238-291 of the American Federation of Musicians. Sherlock Holmes or The Strange Case of Alice Faulkner: The Performing Arts Program presents the only Sherlock Holmes story that has the famous sleuth fall in love with one of the most intriguing women in all literature – the incomparable Alice Faulkner. The adaptation by master playwright William Gillette still remains controversial. Even the creator of the original Sherlock Holmes stories, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, was upset as Ms. Alice wrapped the stalwart Holmes around her little finger. In Sherlock Holmes you will get a great mystery to solve, dynamic characters like Dr. Watson, Professor Moriarty, “Lightfoot” McTague and Count Van Stalburg, plus the one and only Alice Faulkner. Directed by Professor Steve Press. Admission is $10, $5 for DCC students, seniors and DCC staff. Tickets for open seating will be sold at the theater one half hour before show times. DCC Music School Faculty Concert to benefit the MusicLink Scholarship Program: Solo and ensemble playing, classical, jazz, folk, and more. MusicLink to provide scholarships for economically disadvantged students who demonstrate exceptional musical promise. DCC Open House: This annual event provides prospective DCC students – both traditional age high school students and nontraditional students considering new educational options – the opportunity to learn more about the College. The evening will begin with an introduction in the Theatre in Dutchess Hall and continue with a Curriculum Fair held in the cafeteria. Students and their families can meet with representatives from different DCC degree programs, services, and organizations, as well as take a campus tour. Wednesday, April 18, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in Falcon Hall

Hudson Valley Job Fair: The Dutchess Community College Office of Counseling and Career Services and the New York State Department of Labor host this annual Job Fair. More than 100 companies from the Hudson Valley region, Connecticut, and Massachusetts will be represented. Job seekers can also get information about educational and training opportunities at DCC. Wednesday, April 18, 7:00 p.m. James and Betty Hall Theatre, Dutchess Hall

Depression and War as the Crucible of the Postwar Consumers’ Republic: In this Lyceum Series presentation, Lizbeth Cohen, Ph.D. explores how the prosperous postwar order built around mass consumption actually developed during the hard times of the Great Depression and World War II. The new attention that President Franklin Roosevelt and his New Deal gave to the importance of consumers and consumption paved the way for the emergence after the war of what Dr. Cohen has called the “Consumers’ Republic.” Dr. Cohen is the Howard Mumford Jones Professor of American Studies, Department of History at Harvard University. Earth Day Celebration: Co-sponsored by BIOS, DCC’s biology club, and the Student Government Association Programming Board, Earth Day at DCC features food, fun, music, and environmental organizations and information. Friday Night Movie Series Presents The Good German (rated R): The Office of Student Activities sponsors this series of recently released films. This is the final film in the Spring 2007 season. Admission is free. For information, contact (845) 431-8050.

DCC Spring Dance Concert under the direction of Adjunct Instructor of Dance and Choreographer Anne-Marie Zanchetti spotlights the work of students of DCC’s fall and spring semester Applied Dance classes. The program features both professional and student-choreographed works in a variety of dance techniques, including ballet, modern, tap, and jazz, as well as ethnic and cultural dance ranging from belly dance to hip hop. Alumni Hall of Fame Dedication: DCC’s newest Distinguished Alumni join the ranks of local leaders and nationally recognized figures in this free dedication ceremony. An Alumni Dinner follows at 6:00 p.m. at the Culinary Institute of America’s St. Andrews Cafe. The dedication is free. Admission for dinner is $75. DCC Music School Student Recitals: The recital for students up to age 18 is at 1:00 p.m. The recital for adult students is at 4:00 p.m. The DCC Music School is a noncredit program of the Office of Community Services. It provides group and private instruction on a variety of instruments and voice for children and adults of all ages. Admission is free.
