DCC Alumni Association Awards Second Generation Scholarships

Release Date May 2, 2007

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Dutchess Community College Alumni Association has presented Second Generation Scholarships to Richard A. Johnson, Jr. of Gardiner and Madeleine Jane Ouellette of Millbrook. Each year, the Alumni Association awards one or more scholarships of $1,475 to first-time, full-time students planning to enroll at DCC whose parent, guardian, grandparent, child or grandchild is a DCC alumnus. The qualified student may be graduating from high school or a current DCC student, must demonstrate academic achievement, and must register for 12 or more credits for the fall semester.

Johnson is a senior at Walden Senior High School where he has completed honors and advanced placement level courses, as well as college freshman English 101 through a cooperative program with Ulster County Community College. Active in sports, Walden played varsity and JV football, and is the recipient of a Mid-Hudson Athletic League Scholar/Athlete Award. Community service includes work with St. Charles Church and Walden Human Society, fundraising for Hurricane Katrina, weekly food drives through Wallkill Varsity Football, and even volunteer work on behalf of a local Girl Scout troop.

Ouellette is a 16-year-old, home-schooled student currently attending classes part-time at Dutchess Community College, where she has taken Algebra and Trigonometry for Pre-calculus and Post Civil War History. Previously she attended Poughkeepsie Day School and Indian Mountain School (where she received the top Scholar of the Year award). In 2006, Ouellette was nominated for the National Arts Honors Society, and she was nominated to participate in National Youth Leadership Program in 2007 and in 2004. She volunteers for First Night Millbrook and activities at her church.

The DCC Alumni Association presented the scholarships to Johnson and Ouellette on Friday, April 27 at the Culinary Institute of America as part of a dinner to honor 2007 DCC Distinguished Alumni Betsy Brockway and James Campion.  The DCC Alumni Association also celebrated the reunion classes of 1976, 1977, 1982, 1987 and 1997.
