DCC Announces Winners in High School Architectural Design Competition Release date August 1, 2007
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. -- Ten local students received awards in the 15th Annual Dutchess Community College High School Architectural Design Competition. Monetary awards in the amounts of $250 for first place, $150 for second place, $100 for third place, $50 for fourth place and $25 for fifth place were given. Five merit awards were also presented. Over 45 students from area high schools entered this year's competition. The winners are as follows: First place-Daniel Contelmo, Spackenkill High School; second place-Katherine Lee, Arlington High School; third place-Michael McPhee, Arlington High School; fourth place-James Olson, Arlington High School; fifth place-Amanda Hill, Webutuck High School. The five merit award winners are Josh Price, Benjamin Kimble and David Clarke of Arlington High School, Travis Booth of Marlboro High School and Andrew Neidhardt of Rondout High School. Each student submitted design drawings of an ideal residence for a couple recently relocated from Australia. The wife ran a real estate development business and the husband was a stay-at-home dad caring for two children. The couple was committed to sustainable design and the use of green building products. They admired the work of Australian architect Glenn Murcutt. Final projects were evaluated for creativity and imagination, quality of drawing, use of site and practicality of solution. Each student was required to submit a site plan, first and second floor plans and other specific designs for the home. A jury consisting of four professionals judged the projects: Stephen A. Whalen, a registered architect and partner in The Swartz Architectural Group; Karlee Kussel, a project designer with Sloan Architects, P.C.; Lacey Swanson, a project designer with Sloan Architects, P.C. and Catherine McGuire, a register architect, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) AP and a professor in the Architectural Technology program at DCC. The Dutchess Community College High School Architectural Design Competition is sponsored by a mini grant through the Dutchess Community College Foundation.
