48th Annual Dutchess County Regional Science Fair Back at DCC,

Saturday, March 24

Release Date March 20, 2007

The 48th Annual Dutchess County Regional Science Fair will be held at Falcon Hall at the Dutchess Community College main campus in Poughkeepsie on Saturday, March 24, 2007. Dutchess Community College hosts the fair and is a major contributor of exhibit space and facilities. Dutchess County Science Fair and DCC have had a long relationship of nearly half a century, with only a few fairs in that time held off-campus.

Dutchess County Regional Science Fair is one of the longest-running regional science fairs in the world affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair organization. Started in 1959 in response to the successful launching of Sputnik by USSR, the Science Fair’s objective is to stimulate in young people an active interest in science and engineering. Students in grades five through senior high school  perform and presents scientific experiments in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering, earth and space sciences, environmental sciences, behavioral and social sciences. The competition is based on the quality of research projects done by the students, the results of which are reported through exhibits and oral presentations. Students gain valuable knowledge and skills in scientific research, organization and communication skills.

The Dutchess County Regional Science Fair will include approximately 240 students from 36 schools in Dutchess County – all top place winners from their local science fairs. The Senior Division First Place Grand Award winner will receive an all-expense-paid trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held May 13 through 18, 2007. In addition, all participants will be invited to join in the Kids’ Expo parade on April 15 to showcase the top science and engineering research students in Dutchess County.

On Saturday, registration of projects will take place from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. and judging will be from 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Each student will be judged by four different judges. More than 100 judges from Dutchess Community College, IBM, Vassar College, and Marist College will participate in competitive judging. In addition, more than 80 judges from approximately 60 local and national organizations including the Society of Women Engineers, Society of Hispanic Engineers, American Chemical Society and Dutchess County Dental Society will present more than 160 special awards.

The public is invited to view the displays and talk to students between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., and awards will be presented from 3:30 to 4:45 p.m. Dr. Roger Schmidt of IBM, one of the youngest members of the National Academy of Engineering, will be one of the award presenters. More than 1,500 students, teachers, family and friends attended the Award Presentation Ceremony last year.
