Annual DCC Foundation Golf Tournament set to Tee Off The 19th Annual Dutchess Community College Foundation Golf Tournament in memory of Jack Orcutt will be held May 19 at the Dutchess Golf and Country Club in Poughkeepsie. Work of High School Art Teachers to be Featured in DCC Exhibit Dutchess Community College’s Mildred I. Washington Art Gallery will host a display of art by local high school teachers from May 12 through June 13, 2008. Film by DCC Alumnus to Open in New York and California May 30 Dutchess Community College graduate Chris Bell’s Film “Bigger, Stronger, Faster*” will make its 31-theater premiere in New York and California on May 30. The opening follows the film’s success at the Sundance Film Festival, the Full Frame Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. The movie is scheduled for a wider release on June 6. Founding DCC Faculty Member is One of Two Graduation Speakers Anthony Krzywicki, who in 1959 became the first head of the Dutchess Community College Business Department, and Anthony V. Campilii, the retired vice president of Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer of Marist College, will speak at DCC’s commencement ceremony on May 15 at 6 p.m. DCC's Class of 2008 Getting Ready for Graduation On May 15, Dutchess Community College will graduate almost 900 students at its 49th Commencement. The Class of 2008 includes graduates ranging in age from 17 to 59, with a median age of 22. Eighty percent reside in Dutchess County, 19% are residents of other counties and states, and 1% are from foreign countries. Sixty-three-and-a-half percent of the class are women, and 36.5 % are men. More Than 170 Schools to Visit DCC's College Night Dutchess Community College will host College Night on May 8, with more than 170 schools from New York State and beyond expected to participate. The fair is designed to give potential students information about many different colleges, their scholarship and financial aid opportunities, and possible career paths available following graduation. College Night is open to high school juniors, seniors, parents, college students who are transferring, adult and non-traditional learners, and high school counselors. Environmental Challenges Outlined During Earth Day Lecture Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies President Dr. William Schlesinger spoke about the effects of climate change and the planetary population boom as part of his April 22 lecture at DCC titled “Environmental Challenges Facing the Next President.” DCC to Host Sports Medicine Workshop The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) will present a workshop at Dutchess Community College from May 2-4 in Falcon Hall on DCC’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. DCC Business Department Plaza to be Dedicated The Business Department Plaza outside of Dutchess Community College’s Taconic Hall will be dedicated in honor of Anthony Krzywicki, the first head of DCC’s Business Department. DCC Unveils Art Studies Program Dutchess Community College is now offering an Associate in Science in Art Studies, a two-year program designed for students interested in transferring to a four-year college to pursue an interest in the study of art. Four DCC Students Receive SUNY Chancellor's Awards Four Dutchess Community College students were honored with the State University of New York’s (SUNY) highest undergraduate academic honor, the Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence, at an April 7 ceremony held in Albany. Student Achievements in Social Sciences to be Recognized The Department of History, Government and Economics at Dutchess Community College will host its annual awards ceremony to honor DCC students who have achieved excellence in the social sciences. DCC Honors Program Students to be Presented with Awards Students graduating in May from Dutchess Community College’s Honors Program in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Humanities and Social Sciences will be presented with awards celebrating their academic achievements at DCC. Spring Robotics Design Competition Coming to DCC April 25 The Dutchess Community College engineering department will host the SUNY Two-Year Engineering Science Association Spring Robotics Design Competition on April 25. Teams will consist of New York State community college students in two-year engineering programs. DCC Fire Science Program Members to Perform Hose Evaluations Dutchess Community College Fire Science program members will perform a fire hose/nozzle evaluation session on April 19 from 8 a.m. to noon in Parking Lot E on DCC’s main campus in Poughkeepsie. Local fire departments will get the opportunity to work with DCC program members to ensure their equipment is adjusted in such a way that firefighters are getting the specific water flow they need to fight fires. DCC Music School Faculty Concert to Benefit MusicLink Fund Members of the Dutchess Community College Music School faculty will come together on April 12 for a concert to benefit the MusicLink Scholarship Fund, an initiative that provides free or low-cost music lessons to students who otherwise could not afford them. Twenty-first Annual Brazilian Jazz Concert Coming to DCC Matt Finley and Rio JAZZ will once again bring the sounds of Brazilian Jazz to Dutchess Community College when the group performs on April 8. The show will be the 21st annual performance from Finley and company, and the set list will be dedicated to Kelly Conner, an assistant professor of music at DCC who died in the summer of 2007. Finley and Conner performed together often, and Conner’s piece “In the Mist” will be performed by Rio JAZZ on April 8, along with other selections Professor Conner enjoyed playing. DCC Offers Courses in Pesticide Application Dutchess Community College is offering non-credit Pesticide Applicator certification and recertification courses in March. DCC Day Care Receives National Accreditation The Dutchess Community College Day Care Center became one of the first programs in the country to earn accreditation under the reinvented accreditation system from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). January 14, 2008 Building Anticipation: Lego League Tournament Coming to DCC Dutchess Community College will host the region’s first ever Lego League Robotics competition for children ages 6-14 on Feb. 2 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in DCC’s Falcon Hall. The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego League Robotics competition is made up of teams of children charged with using Legos to build small robots that will complete specific energy conservation-themed missions. January 14, 2008 DCC Symposium to Focus on Money Management for College Dutchess Community College will present “Money Matters: Cash for College, the First Regional Symposium,” an initiative aimed at high school students. The symposium will lay the groundwork for high school students to begin preparing for the financial responsibilities associated with college. DCC Announces Findings of 50-Year Socio-Economic Impact Study Dr. D. David Conklin, president of Dutchess Community College, today announced the results of a recently completed study that defines the College’s socio-economic impact on Dutchess County over the past 50 years. The study, conducted by CCBenefits Inc. of Moscow, Idaho, determined that the Dutchess County economy is $807.4 million stronger annually as a direct result of DCC’s past and current impact on the county. According to Dr. Conklin, this figure represents 7.5% of Dutchess County’s total income each year. Two at DCC Have Received SUNY Chancellor's Award Dr. Rita Weber-McKee and Prof. Richard Reitano have been selected to receive SUNY Chancellor’s Awards. Weber-McKee, director of Academic Services and Testing at Dutchess Community College, was selected to receive the 2007 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, while Reitano, department head of History, Government and Economics at DCC, was presented with the 2007 Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching. DCC Announces Winners in High School Architectural Design Competition Ten local students received awards in the 15th Annual Dutchess Community College High School Architectural Design Competition. Monetary awards in the amounts of $250 for first place, $150 for second place, $100 for third place, $50 for fourth place and $25 for fifth place were given. Five merit awards were also presented. DCC Wins State Award for Young Women's Math and Science Program The State University of New York Council for University Advancement (SUNY CUAD) presented Dutchess Community College with one of its 2007 Awards for Excellence. Two DCC Students Nominated to Phi Theta Kappa All-USA Academic Team Dutchess Community College graduates Dmitriy Yermolayev of Poughkeepsie and Matthew Murray of Hyde Park were honored at the annual DCC Convocation on Thursday, May 17 for their nomination to the Phi Theta Kappa All-USA and All-State Academic Teams. Yermolayev and Murray were also honored last month by the State University of New York Chancellor John R. Ryan and New York Community College Trustees Association President Anton N. Kasanof for their inclusion in the New York State All-Academic Team – Yermolayev as a member of the First Team, Murray the Second Team. DCC Graduates 965 – Kicks Off 50th Anniversary Celebration SUNY’s One Millionth Community College Graduate Also Recognized Dutchess Community College graduated 965 students today at its 48th commencement exercises and kicked off the celebration of its 50th anniversary. In addition, the College recognized a milestone in the history of the State University of New York – the awarding of SUNY’s one millionth community college degree. DCC selected graduate and student trustee, Janet Brendli, to be its symbolic one millionth degree recipient. DCC Professor Dives Into Summer Fulbright Project Poughkeepsie/Venezuela – The day after Dutchess Community College’s graduation, DCC Communications Professor Camilo Rojas embarks on a journey to his native Venezuela under the auspices of a Fulbright Scholarship to teach at three Venezuelan universities and to create a documentary on Venezuelan artists. DCC Names New Director of Community Relations and Graphics Judy Eurich of Warwick, N.Y. has joined Dutchess Community College as director of community relations and graphics, the office responsible for all of DCC’s publications, web content, print and broadcast media advertising, press relations, and a variety of campus and community outreach activities. Three DCC Students in Best of SUNY Art Show The artwork of three Dutchess Community College students has been selected for inclusion in the 2007 Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition, which opens Saturday, May 19 at the New York State Museum in Albany. The 2007 Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition showcases the work of SUNY’s top student artists from across the state. This juried show features 75 works selected from the more than 200 pieces in the fall and spring SUNY student art shows held at the State University Plaza in downtown Albany during the past academic year. SUNY Chancellor Honors Two DCC Students Two Dutchess Community College students have received the 2007 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence. Jennifer L. Adult Musicians Rekindle Passion For Their Craft in DCC Early Music Ensemble It’s not their day job. Flutist Frank De Leeuw is an economist and consultant. Viola da gamba player Howard Pepperman is a computer programmer. Violist Jeremy Duckles tunes and restores pianos. Violist cellist Nancy Hull, who first picked up her instrument as an adult, ran a health food store. Together, with the guidance of professional early music specialist Kumiko Imamura, they have become the Dutchess Community College Music School Early Music Ensemble. DCC Alumni Association Awards Second Generation Scholarships The Dutchess Community College Alumni Association has presented Second Generation Scholarships to Richard A. Johnson, Jr. of Gardiner and Madeleine Jane Ouellette of Millbrook. Each year, the Alumni Association awards one or more scholarships of $1,475 to first-time, full-time students planning to enroll at DCC whose parent, guardian, grandparent, child or grandchild is a DCC alumnus. Pawling resident Betsy H. Brockway, class of ’82, the director of the Dutchess County Health and Human Services Cabinet, and Livingston resident and Hyde Park native James Campion, class of ’70, the president of Columbia-Greene Community College, were selected for this year’s honor. DCC Earth Day Promotes Alternative Fuels with BioTour Bus The BioTour bus rolls onto the Dutchess Community College campus for an early Earth Day celebration on Thursday, April 19, from 12:00-2:00 p.m. at Main Campus Walkway. The bus, which is on a 10,000-mile, 100-day tour through the Northeast, is a 1989 International Bluebird school bus with an unaltered six-cylinder diesel engine running on biodiesel and waste vegetable oil. Deng will discuss his experiences as a refugee in the civil war in Sudan, his view of the current situation in Sudan and Dafur, and the process of collaborating on the novel about his life. John Jay Junior Wins 48th Annual Dutchess County Regional Science Fair at DCC John Jay Junior Zhong Zhuang took first place in the senior division of the 48th Regional Science Fair held Saturday, March 24 at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie. The College hosted the fair and was a major contributor, providing exhibit space and facilities. Zhuang’s project comparing ethanol and gasoline showed, among other things, that ethanol actually produces more nitrogen oxide pollution, but less carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide pollution. Zhuang’s win earns him an all-expense-paid trip to Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair, which will be held May 13 through 18, 2007. Deadline Nears for DCC High School Essay Competition The April 1 deadline is nearing for the annual High School Essay Competition sponsored by the Dutchess Community College Department of English and Humanities and the Mid-Hudson English/Language Arts Council. The competition is open to students in grades 9 through 12 from throughout the Mid-Hudson area. Founding Faculty Grant Connects Poughkeepsie High Students and DCC Music School Allyn J. Washington, one of the founding faculty members of Dutchess Community College, is now helping to bring the next generation of students onto the campus. DCC Lyceum Explores Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome Dr. Joy DeGruy Leary present her theory of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome in the Dutchess Community College Lyceum Series on Thursday, February 8. The Theory of Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome suggests that centuries of slavery followed by systemic racism and oppression have resulted in multigenerational adaptive behaviors, some of which have been positive and reflective of resilience, and others that are detrimental and destructive. DCC Exhibits Works of Renowned Sculptor for Women's History Month Dutchess Community College presents the work of a renowned sculptor in Concetta Scarvalione, 1900-1975 at the Mildred I. The College will hold a Women’s History Month reception on this groundbreaking artist on Thursday, March 1 from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. The show’s co-curators are Carol Kushner, Assistant Professor of English at DCC and the artist’s great-niece, and Gallery Director Lynn Palumbo. DCC Honors Faculty and Professional Staff for Long Service Dutchess Community College honored 23 members of its professional and teaching staff for a collective 485 years of service on Monday, January 8. The 2007 honorees included two members of the faculty who have taught at DCC for 40 years each, one who has taught for 35, and one for 30. In addition, seven people were honored for 25 years of service, one for 20, seven for 15, and four for 10 years of service. Four of those honored have not only dedicated their professional lives to DCC, but started out their academic careers as students of the College, too. DCC Director Sheds Light on Doctoral Research Dr. Rita Weber-McKee, the Director of Academic Services and Testing at Dutchess Community College, recently presented a seminar called The Dos and Don’ts on Doctoral Research at SUNY New Paltz. Dr. Weber-McKee co-presented the program with Dr. Donna Berger. Dr. Weber-McKee and Dr. Berger were the first two graduates from the joint doctoral program between SUNY New Paltz and the University at Albany, Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies. Council of Industry and DCC Team for Seminar on Hazardous Materials Compliance The Council of Industry of Southeastern New York is teaming with Dutchess Community College and other Hudson Valley institutions to present a seminar on the stringent environmental standards for electronics equipment recently adopted by the European Union and California, and even stronger regulations which will be adopted in China in March.

Campilii, the retired Vice President for Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer of Marist College. Campilii, who graduated from DCC with an A.A.S. in Business Administration in 1960, earned his B.A. in Business Administration from Marist in 1962, and his M.B.A. from Marist in 1979.
