PAR 100. INTRODUCTION TO EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN - PARAMEDIC

This course is designed to introduce the paramedic student to the EMT-Paramedic Curriculum. Topics include: Roles and Responsibilities of the Paramedic, Medical/Legal issues, Ethics and College Survival Skills. The laboratory section allows for hands-on supervised practice of the topics covered.
PAR 101. ADVANCED AIRWAY MANAGEMENT

This lab course is designed to acquaint the student with advanced airway management and ventilation skills. This course also reviews basic life support psychomotor skills and presents advanced airway management skills.
Pre- or Corequisite: BIO 115
PAR 102. PATHOPHYSIOLOGY AND LIFE SPAN DEVELOPMENT
3 lec. 0 lab. 3 cr. hrs.
This is an introductory course in pathophysiology as it relates to out of hospital medicine. This course focuses on human responses to illness expressed at the physiologic, pathophysiologic, experiential and behavioral levels. Human responses are examined in terms of assessments appropriate to selected problems, rationale for paramedic and medical interventions, and therapeutic effectiveness. Topics include: General Principles of Pathophysiology and Life Span Development.
Prerequisite: BIO 115 with a grade of C or better.
PAR 106. PHARMACOLOGY AND IV Therapy
2 lec. 2 lab. 3 cr. hrs.
This course is designed to introduce the paramedic student to the
categories of pharmacological agents and the application of pharmacological concepts to clinical paramedic practice. Emphasis will be placed on understanding physiological drug actions. Topics include: pharmacology and medication administration. The lab section covers psychomotor skills of medication administration. Skills include phlebotomy, intramuscular and subcutaneous injections, intravenous cannulation, intravenous drug administration, inhalation administration, endotracheal drug administration and sublingual drug administration.
Pre- or Corequisite: PAR 101.
PAR 107. EMS OPERATIONS
2 lec. 0 lab. 2 cr. hrs.
This course is designed to expose the paramedic student to various field operations procedures. Topics include: medical incident command, rescue awareness and operations, hazardous materials awareness and operations, crime scene awareness.
PAR 120. CLINICAL I

This clinical course is designed to accompany the Advanced Airway Management, Patient Assessment, Pathophysiology and Life Span Development courses. Clinical rotations focus on the development of history taking and patient assessment skills. Clinical rotations include: Field, triage, emergency department, morgue and operating room.
Prerequisite: EMB-Basic PAR106. Pre- or Corequisites: PAR 106.
PAR 201. TRAUMA
2 lec. 2 lab. 3 cr. hrs.
This course introduces the paramedic student to specific pathophysiology, assessment and management techniques for trauma patients. Topics include Mechanism of injury, hemorrhage and shock, soft tissue trauma, burns, head and facial trauma, spinal trauma, thoracic trauma, abdominal trauma, musculoskeletal trauma and special considerations. The lab section teaches psychomotor skills of the management of the trauma patient. Skills include, trauma patient assessment, airway management of the trauma patient.
Prerequisites: PAR 101 with a grade of C or better.
PAR 203. CARDIOLOGY AND PULMONOLOGY
3 lec. 2 lab. 4 cr. hrs.
This course covers the specific pathophysiology, assessment and management of the respiratory and cardiac systems. Psychomotor skills included are cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, cardioversion, transthoracic pacing, cardiac emergency management and cardiac arrest management.
Prerequisites: PAR 106 with a grade of C or better.
PAR 205. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES I
4 lec. 0 lab. 4 cr. hrs.
This course covers specific pathophysiology, assessment, and management techniques for common medical conditions encountered in the field. Topics include: Neurology, gastroenterology, urology, endocrinology, toxicology, allergies and anaphylaxis, hematology, infectious and communicable diseases. Special patients and circumstances are also addressed; acute interventions in the home care patient, abuse and assault, behavioral and psychiatric disorders, environmental conditions and the challenged patient.
Prerequisites: PAR 106 with a grade of C or better.
PAR 206. PATIENT ASSESSMENT
2 lec. 2 lab. 3 cr. hrs.
This course is designed to integrate the technique of patient assessment from initial assessment through treatment modalities. Topics include: History taking techniques of physical examination, scene size-up, initial assessment history and physical exam ongoing assessment, communications and documentation. The lab section teaches psychomotor skills of patient assessment, advanced airway, management of ventilation.
Pre- or Corequisite: PAR 203 and PAR 209.
PAR 209. MEDICAL EMERGENCIES II
2 lec. 2 lab. 3 cr. hrs.
This course is designed to introduce the paramedic student to various special circumstances encountered in out of hospital medicine. As a summary course, this class develops and applies the process of clinical decision-making. Topics addressed include: Gynecology, obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics and geriatrics. The lab section covers the psychomotor skills of gynecology, obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics and geriatrics and is heavily focused on scenario based education applying the process of clinical decision-making.
Prerequisites: PAR 205 with a grade of C or better.
PAR 220. CLINICAL II

This clinical course is designed to accompany the Cardiology and Respiratory, Trauma and Medical Emergencies I Courses. Clinical rotations focuses on the development of psychomotor skills and integrative skills. Clinical rotations include: Field, emergency department, trauma critical care, respiratory care, ICU, CCU, cardiac catheterization lab, laboratory, home health care, crisis intervention and psychiatric unit.
Prerequisite: PAR 120. Pre- or Corequisites: PAR 201 and PAR 205.
PAR 230. CLINICAL III
0 lec. 8 lab. 2 cr. hrs.
This course is designed to accompany the Medical Emergencies II and Special Considerations/Clinical Decision Making courses. Clinical rotations focus on treatment of special patient populations and special clinical situations. Clinical rotations include: Field, emergency department, rehabilitation, long term care, home health care, crisis intervention, gynecology, obstetrics, neonatology, pediatrics and gerontology.
Prerequisite: PAR 220. Pre- or Corequisite: PAR203, PAR 204 and PAR 209.
PAR 240. SUMMATIVE EVALUATION
0 lec. 6 lab. 4 cr. hrs.
This summative field evaluation determines if the student is competent to serve as an entry-level clinician. Field rotations place the student in the role of team leader for all calls and expect them to integrate history taking, physical exam and cognitive knowledge into the total management of the patient. Comprehensive examinations evaluate the candidate’s knowledge base and psychomotor skills.
Pre- or Corequisite: PAR 230.
PAR 271. SPECIAL STUDY PROJECT I
1 cr. hr.
A special learning experience designed by one or more students with the cooperation and approval of a faculty member. Proposed study plans require departmental approval. Projects may be based on reading, research, community service, work experience or other activities that advance the student’s knowledge and competence in the field of paramedic or related areas. The student’s time commitment to the project will be approximately 35-50 hours.
PAR 272. SPECIAL STUDY PROJECT II
2 cr. hrs.
Similar to PAR 271 except that the student’s time commitment to the project will be approximately 70-90 hours.
PAR 273. SPECIAL STUDY PROJECT III
3 cr. hrs.
Similar to PAR 271 except that the student’s time commitment to the project will be approximately 105-135 hours.
