NURSING
NUR 100. NURSING INTRODUCTORY SEMINAR

This course is designed for students entering the nursing program to introduce the nursing curriculum, the profession of nursing and the college environment. Content will include: overview of the nursing profession, the nursing curriculum, clinical experiences, study skills, college resources, stress reduction, time management, career planning and transfer options.
NUR 105. NURSING SCIENCE I
3 lec. 8 lab. 6 cr. hrs.
This foundation course introduces the organizing framework for the nursing curriculum. The framework consists of human needs, stress/adaptation, developmental stages, the health/illness continuum, the nursing process, and the National League of Nursing Core Components and their competencies expected of graduates of associate degree nursing programs. Psychomotor and cognitive skills basic to the practice of professional nursing are included in the college laboratory. Clinical experiences occur in long-term care facilities.
A minimal grade of C is required to continue to NUR 112. A student may attempt the course two times only.
Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on math proficiency test or a passing grade in CSM 093 or a college-level math course; satisfactory scores on English proficiency tests; BIO 131 or concurrent enrollment therein.
NUR 107. SURVEY OF PROFESSIONAL NURSING
1 lec. 0 lab. 1 cr. hr.
This course promotes the effective integration into the profession of nursing. The student will explore the following issues and aspects: historical overview of modern nursing, professionalization of the student nurse, overview of the contemporary health care delivery system, ethical and legal issues of professional nursing practice, values clarification and the nursing process for clinical decision making.
A minimal grade of C is required to advance to NUR 112. A student may attempt the course two times.
Corequistite: NUR 105.
NUR 111. COMPUTERS IN NURSING
2 lec. 2 lab. 3 cr. hrs.
This course is designed to develop an understanding of the concepts relevant to the use of information technology in the health care delivery system. It will explore the application of computer systems as a tool for problem solving, decision-making and information management as it relates to nursing services. A student may attempt the course two times.
NUR 112. NURSING SCIENCE II
5 lec. 8 lab. 8 cr. hrs.
This course focuses upon the utilization of the nursing process to promote adaptation of pathophysiologic aspects specific to adults and children experiencing accidental trauma, surgical interventions, burns, musculoskeletal trauma, gynecological, biliary and eye diseases. Complex cognitive and psychomotor skills, necessary for the practice of professional nursing, are included in the college laboratory.Students care for patients in a variety of settings. This course may not be repeated.
Prerequisite: C grade or better in BIO 131; C or better in NUR 105 and NUR 107; concurrent enrollment in NUR 112 and BIO 132. A minimal grade of C is required to continue to NUR 213 and NUR 215.
NUR 204. PROFESSIONAL ISSUES IN NURSING
1 lec. 0 lab. 1 cr. hr.
The course discusses issues that are relevant to the health delivery system and the role of the associate degree nurse. An overview of the Nurse Practice Act prepares the student to understand the dilemmas facing the delivery of contemporary nursing. Students are guided for applying for the RN licensure examination. A minimal grade of C is required to complete this course. This course may not be repeated.
Prerequisite: C grade or better in NUR 213, NUR 215.
NUR 213. NURSING SCIENCE III
5 lec. 8 lab. 8 cr. hrs.
This course focuses upon the utilization of the nursing process to promote adaptation to pathophysiologic aspects specific to adults and children experiencing complex respiratory, digestive, cardiovascular, abnormal tissue, urinary and hepatic disorders, and infectious processes. Complex cognitive and psychomotor skills, necessary for the practice of professional nursing, are included in the college laboratory. Students care for patients in a variety of settings. A minimal grade of C is required to progress to NUR 216. This
course may not be repeated.
Prerequisites: C grade or better in BIO 132 and C or better in NUR
112; concurrent enrollment in BIO 212, NUR 213 and NUR 215.
NUR 215. PARENT-CHILD NURSING
2 lec. 3 lab. 3 cr. hrs.
Parent-child nursing is the study of nursing care related to the prenatal, intrapartal and postpartal periods of the woman and her family. Reproductive issues and selected abnormal conditions during pregnancy and birth are included. Common congenital/genetic conditions and childhood diseases are also discussed. Cognitive and psychomotor skills applicable to parent-child nursing are included in the college laboratory. Students care for patients in a variety of settings. A minimal grade of C is required to progress to NUR 216. This course may not be repeated.
Prerequisites: C grade or better in BIO 132; C grade or better in NUR 112; concurrent enrollment in BIO 212, Nur 215 and NUR 213.
NUR 216. NURSING SCIENCE IV
3 lec. 4 lab. 4 cr. hrs.
This course focuses on the care of patients with psychiatric and neurological dysfunction. Students care for patients in a variety of settings. This course may not be repeated.
Prerequisites: C grade or better in BIO 212; C grade or better in
NUR 213, Nur 215.
NUR 218. NURSING SYNTHESIS
1 lec. 5 lab. 2 cr. hrs.
The course focuses on the transition of the student nurse to the role of the professional nurse. The content emphasizes the synthesis of the knowledge, skills and attitudes as defined by the National League of Nursing Core Components and Competencies. A C grade or better in Nur 218 is required to complete the nursing sequence. This course may not be repeated.
Prerequisite: C grade or better in NUR 216.
NUR 271. SPECIAL STUDY PROJECT I
1 cr. hr.
A special learning experience designed by one or more students with the cooperation and approval of a faculty member. Proposed study plans require departmental approval. Projects may be based on reading, research, community service, work experience, or other activities that advance the student’s knowledge and competence in the field of nursing or related areas. The student’s time commitment to the project will be approximately 35-50 hours.
NUR 272. SPECIAL STUDY PROJECT II
2 cr. hrs.
Similar to NUR 271, except that the student’s time commitment to the project will be approximately 70-90 hours.
NUR 273. SPECIAL STUDY PROJECT III
3 cr. hrs.
Similar to NUR 271, except that the student’s time commitment to the project will be approximately 105-135 hours.
