DENTAL ASSISTING

DAC 101. PRE-CLINICAL DENTAL ASSISTING
3 lec. 2 lab. 4 cr. hrs.


This course will provide a broad background and application of basic chairside procedures. The areas that will be covered didactically and practiced in a pre-clinical setting are: a. Dental Assisting as a Profession; b. Delivery of Dental Treatment; c. Record Taking; d. Medical Emergencies; e. Oral Examination; f. Preventive Dentistry; g. Dental Instrumental and Accessories; h. Pharmacology and Pain Control.
Prerequisite: DAC 103.

DAC 102. INFECTION CONTROL
2 lec. 0 lab. 2 cr. hrs.


The focus of this course is to provide basic concepts, specific step-by -step procedures, and current regulatory mandates related to infection control in the dental setting. Also included will be information regarding management of hazardous material for the Dental Team.
Prerequisite: DAC 103.

Corequisite: DAC 101.

DAC 103. HEAD AND NECK ANATOMY
2 lec. 0 lab. 2 cr. hrs.


This is a core course for Dental Assistants. The course provides an overall view of the structures and functions of the human body and focuses in on anatomical landmarks, osteology, mycology, neurology and vascular systems as they relate to the oral cavity. Other topics addressed are areas of dental histology and dental embryology.

DAC 111. DENTAL RADIOLOGY I
2 lec. 0 lab. 2 cr. hrs.


An introduction to physics and biology of radiation; radiation hygiene; equipment and materials; film exposure and processing, technique and chemistry.

DAC 121. DENTAL RADIOLOGY II
2 lec. 0 lab. 2 cr. hrs.


Continuation of DAC 111. Anatomical landmarks; deviations from normal; evaluation of radiographs. Extra and intraoral projections. Prerequisite: DAC 111 with a grade of C or better.

DAC 201. CHAIRSIDE ASSISTING
3 lec. 2 lab. 4 cr. hrs.


This course will introduce the student to chairside dental materials and basic laboratory materials. Information will include properties, usage, preparation, manipulation of armamentarium and application of each material, and the role of the chairside dental assistant in each of these areas.
Prerequisite: C grade or better in DAC 101, DAC 102, DAC103.

DAC 202. CLINICAL DENTAL ASSISTING
2 lec. 0 lab. 2 cr. hrs.


This course focuses on the extra-expanded duties allowed by New York State Education Law, Section 6608. These skills include: (1) providing patient education; (2) taking preliminary medical histories and vital signs; (3) placing and removing rubber dams; (4) selecting and pre-fitting provisional crowns; (5) selecting and pre-fitting orthodontic bands; (6) removing orthodontic arch wires and ligature ties; (7) placing and removing matrix bands; (8) taking impressions for study casts or diagnostic casts; (9) removing periodontal dressings; (10) removing sutures.
Prerequisite: C Grade or better in DAC 101, DAC 102, DAC 103, DAC 201.

Corequisite: DAC 203.


DAC 203. DENTAL SPECIALTIES SEMINAR
1 lec. 0 lab. 1 cr. hr.


This course will focus in on various dental specialties such as Endodontics, Periodontics, Orthodontics, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Guest dental specialists in each of the areas will conduct seminars.
Prerequisite: C grade or better in DAC 101, DAC 102, DAC 103, DAC 201.

Corequisite: DAC 202.

DAC 204. CLINICAL DENTAL ASSISTING II- PRECEPTORSHIP
0 lec. 14 lab. 2 cr. hrs.


This course will enable each dental assisting student to gain clinical proficiency in the expanded duties legally permitted in the State of New York. The course focuses solely on those duties allowed by New York State Education Law, Section 6608. Clinical proficiency will be achieved through a minimum of 200 hours of clinical experiences monitored by a licensed Dentist/Preceptor. In addition, a weekly conference will provide the student and Preceptor with an avenue for discussion and expansion of clinical experiences, treatment modalities and ethical concerns. Each clinical experience will be planned, supervised and evaluated by the Preceptor.
Prerequisites: C Grade or better in DAC 101, DAC 102, DAC 103, DAC 201.

Corequisite: DAC 202 and DAC 203.
