Welcome to The New Directions Program

What is New Directions?

New Directions is a program for people who have been out of school for a number of years and who are noDon't Let Your Dream Wait Another Yearw thinking of enrolling in college. All adult students (full-time or part-time) are eligible to participate in New Directions, which walks you through the college re-entry process.

New Directions helps you understand college orientation and academic advisement, and offers an array of support services designed especially for you, the adult student. The program is a joint initiative of the Office of Counseling and Career Services, the Admissions Office, and the Office of the Registrar. Don't Let Your Dream Wait Another Year!

Congratulations on taking the first step to make your dream of a college education come true. The decision to return to formal education is life-changing for most adult students. You will be interested to note that many returning adult students ask themselves the same questions:

  • Will I be able to compete with the younger students?
  • Will I be the oldest person in the class?
  • Will I be able to juggle coming to class, studying, work, and family responsibilities?

There is no escaping the fact that some adjustments will have to be made to your schedule, but the benefits of not letting your dream of a college degree wait another year will far outweigh any challenges that come your way.

Available Support Services

New Directions advisors are trained to assist you with educational planning, enrollment, course selection, and creating a schedule. They continue to provide advisement throughout your years at DCC. The program offers special receptions and informal seminars on topics which pertain to adult learners and their academic success, such as time management and study skills. You will have opportunities to meet with faculty, staff, and experienced adult students who will assist you in maximizing your college experience. The College’s Advising Center has hours in the evening, Monday through Thursday to further assist you in your college education.
