    Lyceum- Patrice Gaines
"What People In Prison Have Taught Me About Being Free"
James And Betty Hall Theatre, 12:30 P.M.

As an award-winning journalist and former Washington Post reporter, Patrice Gaines has proven that you cannot judge a book by its cover. Her accomplishments include her autobiography "Laughing in the Dark: From Colored Girl to Woman of Color – A Journey from Prison to Power" and the inspirational "Moments of Grace: Meeting the Challenge." Before taking on these challenges, she had to change her lifestyle dramatically. Patrice grew up a self-hating young woman, entering one abusive relationship after another in search of love and purpose. She became a heroin user, went to prison for possession of the drug and was raped and beaten before she began her long contemplative journey to change. In her speech, Gaines will detail the changes she made to turn away from drugs, abusive men and low self-esteem to become a confident journalist, author and national speaker.

Blossoms of Fire - A film by Maureen Gosling, 2000. 74 min.
James and Betty Hall Theatre, 5:30 P.M.

Jamaica/USA - Spanish and Zopotec with English subtitles
CORAL PRIZE, HAVANA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, HAVANA, CUBA
Blossoms of Fire is a dazzling, whirling dance of a film that celebrates the extraordinary lives of the Isthmus Zapotecs of southern Oaxaca, Mexico. The Isthmus Zapotecs, whose culture is rooted in a strong work ethic and fierce independent streak, have resulted not only in powerful women, but also in the region's progressive politics and an unusual tolerance of alternative gender roles. Artists like Miguel Covarrubias and Frida Kahlo have often celebrated and rendered tribute in their paintings to the legendary beauty of the woman of Juchitan. Blossoms of Fire shows these women in all their brightly colored, opinionated glory as they run their own businesses, embroider their signature of fiery flowers on clothing and comment with angry humor on articles in the foreign press that flippantly and inaccurately depict them as a promiscuous matriarchy.

Lyceum- Anya Kamenetz, "Time To Stand Up: Why The Youth Vote Will Rock In '08"
James and Betty Hall Theatre, 12:30 P.M.

She is a journalist who covers the unique economic challenges facing Generation X and Y, such as higher education costs, the changing job market and the dangers of debt. Polls show that voters ages 18 to 31 are more engaged and empowered than they have been for a generation, and they will outnumber the baby boomers in 2008. Candidates are responding to this upswing in youth power. The presentation covers the most important political issues affecting young people, from jobs to education to global warming, and will get students excited while giving them the tools to get involved.
