The Phlebotomy Program at DCC is for you if you want a career as a phlebotomist. The phlebotomist performs blood collection on patients by venipuncture or skin puncture for the purpose of laboratory analysis. Phlebotomists may also enter and retrieve data from a computer, prepare and maintain equipment for obtaining blood specimens, and insure proper care for specimens.
At Dutchess Community College, your program includes both theory and practical experience. The program is a comprehensive educational experience as the student receives a broad background in communication skills, interpersonal relations, social responsibilities, and basic math and science skills. Phlebotomy techniques and equipment are introduced to students in a campus environment and during the second phlebotomy course, students complete an internship program of over 120 hours of studying in an area laboratory or physician's office.
After graduation, you are prepared to enter a rewarding career in phlebotomy. You are also eligible for national board examinations such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry. Those graduates who which to pursue additional education may want to consider the fields of Medical Laboratory Technology or Nursing.
As a graduate of the program, you may work for a hospital laboratory, medical group laboratory, state and federal health agencies, physician's office, or an insurance company.
