The Campus Security Department is a hybrid operation comprised of 1 Director, 3
Unsworn civil service officers and 5 private contract officers daily, one civil service
dispatcher, and one civil service Locksmith, 24/5. On weekends and holidays 2 private
contract guards function per 8-hour shift, patrolling and manning the Dispatcher’s
position at the control desk in the Security Office. Three student aides are also hired, trained, and assigned parking lot enforcement duties during the day shift throughout the business week. Security Office staff conduct foot and vehicle patrols of the campus building and grounds armed with 2 way walkie-talkie radios and using electronic data recorders.
Additionally, electronic surveillance (CCTV) of selected sites on campus, escort services, emergency transport, motorist assistance (unlocks, Jumpstarts), rapid response and handling of emerging emergency conditions, conducting crime and Accident Prevention, reporting of crimes and other incidents, enforcing the campus code of conduct and NYS laws, conducting missing students investigations, testifying in court and administrative hearings, light outage reporting, identifying and reporting of accident prone conditions, serving on the College Security Committee, are some of the activities the security staff engage in on their assigned tours. The Town of Poughkeepsie Police and the Dutchess County Sheriffs Department personnel work in conjunction with the Campus Security Department on parking lot patrol, accident reporting investigations, and arrests when necessary. Also Security performs and complies with the pertinent provisions of the Clery Act in reporting crime statistics to the Board of Education and the College Community.
The Director and select civil service officers assist in enforcing all OSHA
Regulations, and the pertinent provisions of the NY State Building and Fire Code;
schedule OSHA mandated training; inspect Chemical Storage areas; act as liaison with
the Fire and Police Departments including the Dutchess County Haz. Mat Team, and the NYS Emergency Management Personnel; perform ex-officio duties with both
Personal Safety and Chemical Hygiene Committees; serve as a member of the
Chemical spill response team and the Crisis Response Team; oversee Chemical waste
procedures; conduct safety tours with Insurance safety representatives, Police, Fire,
OSHA and Code enforcement Officials; act as E.P.A. Coordinator for the coming
inspection in 2004; coordinate and disseminate chemical inventories from various
College Departments to the appropriate government agencies, and a plethora of other
activities. The Civil Service Locksmith issues keys, prepares cores, oversees via
computer software, access of gates and soon -to- be campus buildings; manages via
computer, access alarms to certain laboratories throughout campus as well as the Business Office and the Bookstore; prepares the necessary locksmith reports and files as required; repairs locks, door closers, and doors including handicap doors, and prepares security related reports as directed.
