Financial Aid Check List
To apply for financial aid (including loan monies) you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This one form is used to initially apply for federal and state grants, loans and work-study programs.
Tips on applying for financial aid:
- Get a PIN, a personal identification number. This pin number allows you to sign your FAFSA for electronically. If you are required to use parent information on your FAFSA then a parent would need their own PIN to sign your FAFSA. Go to http://www.pin.ed.gov/
- Collect income information. You will need income tax returns and W-2 forms and any other record of income to complete your FAFSA.
- Complete the FAFSA. This form is completed online. If you do not have access to the internet you may use the computers in the DCC Library once you have a Dutchess Community College I.D. Go to http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
- If you are interested in obtaining federal Stafford loans and/or College Work-Study make sure you answer the FAFSA question appropriately which asks which types of financial aid you are interest.
- We will be awarding your financial aid based on your expected enrollment. Make sure you consider your choices carefully when you answer the enrollment question on the FAFSA.
- Remember to list Dutchess Community College on your FAFSA. Our federal school code for the FAFSA form is 002864.
- Once you submit your FAFSA form electronically you will be able to click on a link to complete the full-time application for New York State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) and other New York State grants and scholarships. If you do not complete the TAP application at the time you submit your FAFSA application you can still apply. Go to http://www.tapweb.org/ . Please note if you do not complete the FAFSA you will not be able to access the TAP application.
- You will receive notification by email regarding the processing results of your FAFSA form. This information will also be sent to the schools you have listed on the form. Also, you will receive by email the results of your TAP information.
If you are 11 Credits or less make sure you follow these guidelines below:
- When a student is completing the FAFSA, they MUST indicate that their enrollment status will be part-time. If the student does not indicate their intent to be part time, they will not be considered for the NYS APTS program (Aid for Part-time Study).
- After being awarded APTS, students must complete the APTS application and submit it with a signed copy of their 2007 New York State tax returns to the Office of Financial Aid.
