Pell Grants
A Federal Pell Grant, unlike a loan, does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. (A professional degree is typically earned after earning a bachelor’s degree in a field such as medicine, law, or dentistry.) In some cases, you may receive a Pell Grant for attending a post baccalaureate teacher certification program. For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation of financial aid to which other aid may be added.
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants
A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG) is for undergraduates with exceptional financial need’that is, students with the lowest Expected Family Contributions (EFCs)and gives priority to students who receive Federal Pell Grants. An FSEOG doesn’t have to be paid back.
ACADEMIC COMPETITIVENESS GRANT
An Academic Competitiveness Grant provides up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year to full-time students who are eligible for a Federal Pell Grant and who have successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education. Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
Educational Opportunity Grant Program (EOP):
Dutchess Community College participates in the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) of SUNY. EOP is an academic and financial support program offered at SUNY campuses to provide a college education for capable students who have not had the same opportunity as other students to realize their academic potential because of limited financial resources and inadequate academic preparation. To aid these students, EOP provides tutoring, personal counseling, academic advisement, career planning services, and financial support.
Applicants desiring additional information regarding EOP should contact the EOP Office at Dutchess Community College at 845-431-8039.
Tuition Assistance Program (TAP and APTS):
The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation provides aid to both full-time and part-time students.
TAP grants are designed to assist New York State residents who are attending college full-time, with tuition costs. A student may apply by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. New York State Higher Education Services Corporation will generate an ETA (Express TAP Application) for the student to complete and return to Albany. You can apply for TAP online at TAP on the Web after you have finished completing your FAFSA.
APTS (Aid for Part-time Study) grants are available to eligible matriculated students enrolling for three to eleven credits. Applicants, to qualify:
- Should not have “W” grades exceeding 20% of all prior credits attempted at DCC.
- Have at least a 2.0 GPA.
- Completed 50% of prior semester’s credits.
- Have financial need.
- Have not used the maximum TAP points to be eligible for state aid.
- Meet the APTS net taxable income limits (based on NYS 2007 tax returns).
- If you were claimed as a tax dependent by your parents in 2007, your family income (i.e. net taxable income of student and parents) cannot exceed $50,500.
- If you were not eligible to be claimed as a tax dependent by your parents in 2007, your income (i.e. net taxable income of student and/or spouse, if married as of December 31, 2007) cannot exceed $34,250.

To apply for the APTS Grant you must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. When a student is completing the FAFSA, they MUST indicate that their enrollment status will be part-time. If the student does not indicate their intent to be part time, they will not be considered for the APTS program. After being awarded APTS, students must complete the APTS application and submit it with a signed copy of their 2007 New York State tax returns to the Office of Financial Aid.
